The 1st XI defeated Chipping Sodbury by five runs in a thriller at the Bartons but were denied the championship as leaders Pak Bristolians also won. Wessy lost the toss and we were put into bat. The innings got off to a steady start with Tampa (6) and Ian Nairn (20) putting on 24 for the first wicket and Wessy (34) and Sagey (27) then putting on 52 for the third wicket to take us to 86-3 in the 28th over. Boardy (2) came and went quickly before Byo (19) and Stiff (20) put on a rapid 41 for the sixth wicket to take the score up to 137-6 in the 39th over. The last four wickets only added a further five runs to leave us on a below par 142 all out. The Chipping run chase got off to a slow start thanks to some great bowling from Andy Nairn (2-28) and Butchy (2-23) but when their sixth wicket pair added 68 to leave them 118-6 in the 39th over the game could have gone either way. Great bowling from Huddy (2-31) saw them reduced to 133-9 after 44 overs which left them needing ten to win off the last over. Wessy (2-10) bowled the all important over and with just four runs being scored from the first five balls a six was needed from the last ball. Fortunately for us the batsman was caught on the boundary by Sagey to pull off a great win. Congratulations go to Wessy, who skippered the side brilliantly, and all of the players who gave 100% in every match to make our first ever season in the senior division such a success. The Sunday XI were also involved in a close finish at Portishead where they won by three wickets with just five balls to spare. Portishead batted first and scored a well below par 139 all out as they were destroyed by a brilliant five over spell of 6-17 by Tim Nicholson. Ronaldo (2-23) also chipped in with a couple of useful wickets and Jimmer (1-32) and debutant Tim Smallridge (1-10) were the other wicket takers. The run chase started slowly but useful knocks of 24 from Tim Smallridge and 23 from Huddy kept us in the game and it was left to our bowling hero Tim Nicholson (33*) and Wessy (27*) to knock off the remaining runs in the last over.
The U15's completed their league season with an 8 wicket win at Uphill Castle on Thursday evening, both teams comprising a mixture of U15's and U13's. The opposition batted first and were bowled out for 90 in their last over, thanks to an impressive spell from Tom Bond who finished with 4-23 from his 5 overs and an equally effective 2-6 from Lloyd Davies in only 2 overs. The already gloomy light meant batting second was going to be in steadily deteriorating conditions but despite this and hardly being able to see the ball come the finish, after the early losses of Ali Palmer (8) and Alex Wall (6), captain Archie Stead (34no) and Tom Bond (31no) saw us home to victory with an unbroken partnership of 74 for the 3rd wicket as we reached 94-2 with 2 overs to spare.

The 2nd XI's last league match of the season against Hengrove has been cancelled as Hengrove couldn't raise a team so our season finishes with a record of 11 wins and two defeats which sets a new 2nd XI league record for the most matches won in a season. Congratulations go to Bodger and all of the players who contributed to a great season for the 2nd XI and let's hope they can do the same next year.
The U13's match against Weston-Super-Mare Wonders tonight has been cancelled because they could not get a pitch, so a further (and most likely final) attempt to re-arrange is being made for some time next week. Details will be posted here as soon as they are known.

The 1st XI ensured that they kept in touch with league leaders Pak Bristolians as they defeated Cleeve by 29 runs to stay in second place and take the championship race to the final game of the season. Wessy lost the toss and we were put into bat. The innings got off to a good start with Tampa and Ian Nairn (22) putting on 47. Tampa and Wessy (26) then put on 54 for the second wicket and Boardy (34) joined Tampa to put on 43 for the third wicket before Tampa was dismissed for a well compiled 58. Byo scored a quick 36 before a flurry of late wickets saw us end on a very competitive 201-8 in our allotted 45 overs. The Cleeve run chase got off to good start with the score at 61-1 after 13 overs but three wickets then fell for the addition of just one run and the game swung in our favour. A good fourth wicket partnership of 57 saw the momentum swing back towards Cleeve but when their professional was caught and bowled by Huddy to bring the score to 119-6 the game was there for the taking and good bowling from both Nairns, Andy (4-33) and Ian (2-24), ensured that we got the crucial victory. Huddy also bowled well to pick up 2-33. The 2nd XI suffered only their second defeat of the season at home to Stapleton as they were defeated by 94 runs. Stapleton won the toss and elected to bat first. They reached a very competitive total of 195-7 in their allotted 45 overs with Hazzo once again being the pick of the bowlers with 3-59 and Witho picking up a more than useful 2-16. The Blagdon run chase got off to the worst possible start with three wickets being lost without a run on the board and despite an excellent 50 from the in form Wobble we could only reach 101 before our last wicket fell. The Sunday XI match against Oldbury On Severn was cancelled because we couldn't raise a team.
The U15's were outplayed by a very strong W-S-M team on Wednesday night losing by 8 wickets. If it had not been for a heroic performance by captain Adam Crooks (33) we would probably have been blown away inside 10 overs. As it was batting at number 5 and arriving at the crease in the 5th over after our top order had been decimated to a scoreline of 9 for 5 he produced the only real resistance to their attack. With help from Adam Burroughs (3) and Josh Chastney (5) in the low order he led an excellent recovery as we managed to reach a respectable total of 78-9. This was never going to be enough against the prolific W-S-M batting side and the target was duly reached inside 11 overs as Weston cruised to 79-2 despite a hostile bowling spell from Tom Bond (2-24) who took the only 2 wickets to fall.
The U13's, following a string of recent wins, travelled to undefeated, title chasing Nailsea last night hoping perhaps to pull off a surprise victory. The task was all the harder given that we played with four U11's in the side and we eventually succumbed to their strength as we lost by 22 runs, in a nevertheless creditable performance. Nailsea batted first and reached 117-3 in their 20 overs. It fell to captain Haydon Lyons (45) to lead the chase but even with his excellent contribution we never managed to get enough momentum in our reply and were always behind the run rate, finishing on 95-8.

The 1st XI climbed to second in the table with a convincing 113 run victory over Long Ashton at the Bartons. Wessy lost the toss and we were put into bat. The innings got off to the worst possible start with Tampa being dismissed to the first ball of the match but Wessy and Ian Nairn (18) turned things around with a solid partnership of 54 for the second wicket. Sagey (45) and Wessy then put on 95 from just 92 balls for the third wicket and when Wessy was dismissed for a well compiled 61 in the 36th over the score stood at 157-4. Boardy then took control of the match and smacked the ball out of the ground on no less than seven occassions to plunder 90 runs from just 46 balls and take the total to an awesome 263-4 in our allotted 45 overs. This is the second highest total ever made at the Bartons and the fourth highest ever made by us in 1st XI league matches. The unbroken fifth wicket partnership between Boardy and Stiff (15*) was 106 from just 56 balls. The Long Ashton run chase never really gathered momentum and tight spells from Andy Nairn and Gary Paramore (1-44), who was making his 1st XI league debut, ensured that the run rate was kept down. Huddy then bowled an excellent spell of 2-14 from seven overs and Nairny returned for a second spell to polish off the tail and pick up 6-45, which are his best figures of the season and his fourth five wicket haul. The 2nd XI assured themselves of the second division championship with a massive 168 run win at Lodway. I haven't been able to get hold of the scorebook for the match so do not know the full details of the individual performances but we batted first and scored 257-5 with Wobble getting 60 odd and Rhys Davies, Robbo and Delsy scoring 40 odd each. We then bowled Lodway out for 89 with Hazzo picking up 8-21, which included the first hat-trick in his 28 year career for the club. Check back in a week or so for the full scorecard of the match. The Sunday XI suffered a five wicket defeat by Filton Wayfarers at the Bartons. We batted first and scored a competitive 191-7 in our allotted 40 overs with Rhys Davies (54) hitting his second fifty of the season and Huddy (54*) hitting his third. Debutant James Urquhart also made a more than useful 31 from just 18 balls. Filton knocked off the runs with three overs to spare for the loss of just five wickets. James Urquhart picked up figures of 2-44, as well as holding two catches, to cap an impressive debut and Huddy (1-7) and Ronaldo (1-32) also bowled well.
Boardy took a few pictures on the Worcester tour and they have now been uploaded.
The tour of Worcester ended today with victories in both of our matches against Chaddesley Corbett and Pershore. We played Chaddesley Corbett yesterday in a timed match and won by just six runs in a high scoring encounter that went right to the wire. The Chaddesley team was skippered by none other than Blagdon stalwart Andy Martin who now plays most of his cricket for them. We batted first and scored a mammoth 252-7 before skipper Boardy declared. Virtually all of the batsmen got runs but Boardy was the only one to pass the fifty mark with 80 runs from just 55 balls. Jimmer (37) and Caddy (33) were the next highest run scorers. Despite restricting Chaddesley to 21-5 at one stage they still got within seven runs of victory before Butchy dismissed their last batsman with just four balls remaining. Pete Rooney was the pick of the bowlers with a devastating spell of 4-30 and Huddy (3-15) bowled excellently at the end of the innings. After a night spent clubbing in the centre of Worcester you could have forgiven the players for taking it easy today but everyone was up for the game and we comfortably defeated Pershore by 20 runs in another high scoring encounter with Tampa taking over the captaincy. We batted first again and Boardy (35) got the innings off to a great start with another aggressive knock. Tampa (21) then carried on the good work before Wessy (49) was dismissed just one run short of yet another fifty in a whirlwind knock which got us up to the huge total of 247-9. Pershore could only reach 227 all out in reply with Caddy (4-35) and Huddy (3-25) being the chief destroyers. A big thank you goes to Wessy who organised the trip and to all of the players who made the journey up the M5 to represent the club.

The 1st XI fell to their second successive defeat, away to Bristol Pakistanis, and therefore lost ground on top of the table Pak Bristolians. Wessy won the toss and put the Pakistanis into bat. They managed to reach a massive 222-8 thanks to some big hitting in the last ten overs which saw 70 runs added to the total. Andy Nairn was rewarded for some hostile bowling by returning figures of 5-68, which was his third five wicket haul of the season, and Butchy (1-31), Byo (1-39) and Huddy (1-45) were also in the wickets. The run chase got off to a steady start with a partnership of 29 for the first wicket between Tampa (21) and Ian Nairn (12) and 31 for the second wicket between Tampa and Wessy. After that point wickets were lost at regular intervals and only stout resistance from Wessy, who chalked up his 54th 1st XI league fifty, kept us in with a chance. When he was dismissed for 58 in the 37th over the game was over but sensible batting from Buckers (12) and Huddy (20 not out) ensured that we reached 175 and got the full batting points. The 2nd XI comfortably defeated Frampton Cotterell by eight wickets at the Bartons to extend their lead at the top of division two. Frampton batted first and scored a competitive 148-8 off their 45 overs with Robbo (2-27), Hazzo (1-29 off 15 overs) and Seany D (2-46), who took his seasons wicket tally to 30, being the pick of the bowlers. The runs were knocked off in just 26.4 overs with Robbo (34 from 42 balls), Caddy (33 not out from 35) and Witho (72 not out from 74) smashing the ball to all parts of the ground. The Sunday XI were defeated by a strong Midsomer Norton side in a high scoring encounter. Midsomer batted first and scored a huge 250-5 in their allotted 40 overs with Witho (2-42) returning the best figures and Pete Rooney (1-25), Jenny Withers (1-29) and Jimbo (1-36) also chipping in with wickets. The run chase got off to a slow start but Delsy (50) and Huddy (62) both reached their half centuries before being dismissed and a late flurry of 47 from just 16 balls by Robbo was not quite enough to get us to victory.
The U15's recorded their second League victory of the season at the expense of Congresbury with a comfortable 22 runs win. Our batting stars were Tom Williams (28), Alex Milward (21) and Tom Bond (16) as we topped the hundred mark, 103-6 for only the third time this season. Russ Moore (3-5), Archie Stead (3-18) and Jenny Withers (2-10) ensured that Congresbury's reply, 81 all out, was well contained and that our score was never seriously threatened.

The 1st XI were knocked from the top of the senior division by a ten wicket thumping at St Mary Redcliffe. Wessy lost the toss to ex Blagdon skipper Paul 'Wally' Waters and we were asked to bat. The early loss of both openers, Ian Nairn (2) and Tampa (6), saw the innings get off to a bad start but Wessy (24) and Sagey (16) then shared in a 41 run partnership to get things back on track. After Sagey was dismissed with the score on 49 a further four wickets fell for the addition of only ten runs which left the innings in tatters at 59-7, but a 16 run partnership between Andy Nairn (13) and James Hemming (1) took the score to 75 and ensured we gained a batting point. After they were both dismissed within the space of four balls it was left to Johnno and Butchy to try and get us up to 100 and the second batting point. Unfortunately we fell one run short as Butchy was dismissed off the second ball of the last over for 5, leaving Johnno stranded on a classy 18 from just 17 balls. Congratulations go to Wally whose shrewd field placings and cunning tactics throughout the innings never allowed it to gain momentum. The Redcliffe opening pair of Bhatt and Wall never looked in much trouble as they steadily made their way to the 100 run winning target and eventually got there in the 31st over to inflict upon us only the fourth ten wicket loss in our 1st XI league history. The 2nd XI maintained their position at the top of the second division with a 32 run victory over Bitton. Bodger lost the toss and we were asked to bat. Witho (38) and Robbo (37) were the main contributors to our total of 136-7 with Bodger (19) also chipping in with some useful runs. Bitton could only reach 104-8 in their reply before the overs ran out. Sean Donovan and Hazzo, who both returned figures of 3-28, were the main wicket takers and Witho topped off a fine all round performance by taking 2-9 and holding a catch. The Sunday XI match that was scheduled against Bitton at the Bartons was cancelled due to a fixture conflict.
The under 11's defeated Portishead by 15 runs today. We batted first and everyone did very well. Doug Gray and George Gillard started the innings with a stand of 27, George top-scoring with 13 not out. We scored 265 for 3 off 20 overs. When we fielded Ed Williams and Will Yard got us off to a great start with 2 quick wickets and they finished with figures of 1-11 and 1-3. We pegged their batsmen back well and their highest score was 3 until the 19th over when George Parsons slashed at everything and got 13. Peter Strong, playing his first match, finished on 1-5. Portishead scored 250 for 5.
The under 13's defeated Weston-Super-Mare Wizards by 61 runs last night in a low scoring encounter at the Bartons. We batted first and scored a competitive 95-9 in our allotted 20 overs with Haydon Lyons top scoring with 36. The Wizards were then dismissed for just 34 with Simon Hill (2-2) and Angus Yard (2-6) being the pick of the bowlers. |
