posted by 'H' on Saturday, 26 Jul, 2003

The under 13's have played three matches in the last week and a half and the net result is two wins and a defeat.

We played Cheddar on 17 July and beat them comfortably by 40 runs with Jack Lyons scoring 35 and Lloyd Davies 22 in our total of 111-6. Cheddar could only manage 71-6 in reply.

We then played Cleeve Comets on 22 July and lost by nine wickets. Haydon Lyons top scored with 23 in our total of 83-9 which was easily overtaken by Cleeve.

Finally, we played Failand & Portbury on 24 July and beat them by four wickets. Angus Yard (17 not out) and Jack Lyons (12) were the main contributors to our total of 71-6 which overhauled the 70 all out that Failand had posted.

WEEKEND RESULTS
posted by Statto on Sunday, 20 Jul, 2003

The 1st XI won their top of the table clash with Twyford House to move clear of the chasing pack at the top of the senior division.

Wessy lost the toss and Twyford elected to bat. An early breakthrough by Butchy (1-35) raised hopes that we could dismiss them cheaply but a stand of 150 between Derry West (69) and Ian Blakemore (78) set them up for a big total. The introduction of Ian Nairn (1-37) and Byo (1-77) saw the run rate dip for a while but 52 runs were scored from the last seven overs to take them to a very competitive total of 237-4 in their allotted 45 overs. Andy Nairn (1-53) was the other wicket taker.

The run chase got underway with Tampa and Ian Nairn hoping to repeat their heroics of last week but unfortunately it was not to be as Tampa was dismissed for a duck with the total on just nine. Wessy and Nairny then compiled a magnificent 134 run partnership from just 154 balls which kept us up with the required rate. The partnership was brought to an end when Nairny was unluckily run out after scoring 67. Wessy (76) and Boardy (13) then put on 26 in 28 balls before Wessy edged one to the keeper and Boardy put on a further 19 in 26 balls with Byo before he went the same way as the skipper. After both Stiff and Andy Nairn were dismissed for ducks we had reached 203-6 with five overs to go. From that point on the match belonged to Byo who's awesome hitting, including three huge sixes, took him to 58 not out from just 40 balls and guided us to victory with eight balls to spare. Buckers (3*) was the other not out batsman at the end. This was the highest score we have ever chased to win and is the highest second innings total we have ever scored in 1st XI league matches.

The 2nd XI continued their dominance of the second division with a convincing eight wicket victory over fourth placed Bradley Stoke.

Bodger lost the toss and Bradley Stoke elected to bat. Thanks to excellent bowling from Ben Lyons (3-18) and Hazzo (3-23) they were dismissed for just 110. Seany D (1-31) and Caddy (1-1) were the other wicket takers.

The opening pair of Robbo and Rhys Davies virtually assured us of victory with a stand of 84 before Robbo was bowled for 38. Bodger (0) came and went quickly and it was left to Wobble and Rhys Davies to steer us home with just under 20 overs to spare. Rhys Davies finished on 54 not out which was his first fifty in senior cricket for the club.

The Sunday XI went down to a 41 run defeat by Hambrook in a high scoring encounter at the Bartons.

Hambrook batted first and scored a mammoth 235-5 in their allotted 40 overs with Byo (2-23), Ronaldo (2-42) and Dave Pople (1-46) picking up the wickets.

The run chase started well as Jon Withers batted excellently to notch up his first fifty for the club. He was eventually dismissed for 61 from 74 balls and his innings contained three sixes. Byo then followed up his 58 for the 1st XI yesterday with a blistering 84 from just 60 balls which included no less than six sixes. Unfortunately none of the other batsman could stick around with them and we eventually finished on 194-9 when the overs ran out.

UNDER 15's
posted by 'H' on Wednesday, 16 Jul, 2003

Back to earth for the U15's this week as a strong Cheddar team outplayed us with a very strong batting and bowling performance to which we had no answer.

Batting first they scored a massive 142-8, our main bowling successes being Rhys Davies (2-32) and Russ Moore (2-16). We struggled to score runs against their hostile bowling attack and apart from Adam Crooks (28) and Alex Milward (11no) no-one else managed to get into double figures as we finished on 88-9.

WEEKEND RESULTS & CLUB DAY SUMMARY
posted by Statto on Sunday, 13 Jul, 2003

The 1st XI went back to the top of the senior division with a convincing eight wicket victory over second placed Almondsbury.

Wessy lost the toss and Almondsbury elected to bat. A top quality spell of fast bowling from Andy Nairn left them reeling at 77-6 before their eighth wicket pair put on 84 runs to help get the final total up to a very competitive 178-7 in their allotted 45 overs. Nairny (5-31) ended up with his second consecutive five wicket return and Huddy (2-42) was the only other wicket taker.

For the first time this season our opening pair of Tampa and Ian Nairn saw off the opening attack and went on to make big scores. The partnership was finally broken with the score on 111 as Tampa was dismissed for 42. Nairny then followed shortly afterwards for 47 and a 65 run partnership between Wessy (26*) and Sagey (35*) saw the runs knocked off with over five overs to spare.

The 2nd XI comfortably defeated Bohemians by 139 runs to stay at the top of the second division.

Bodger won the toss for the third consecutive week and elected to bat first. We rattled up a huge total of 199-8 in our allotted 45 overs thanks to a blistering 97 from just 92 balls by Wobble and a useful 24 from Robbo.

Bohemians were dismissed for just 60 runs in the 34th over with Caddy being the chief destroyer with 4-12 and everyone else picking up a wicket apiece.

The Sunday XI didn't have a game today as it was the annual club day at the Bartons. The day was once again planned excellently by 'H' and there was plenty going on besides the cricket.

The cricketing side of things involved a tournament of four teams of seven players, with two seniors on each side and the remaining five made up of under 15's, under 13's and under 11's. The teams were skippered by Witho, Buckers, Delsy and Statto and each team played each other once with the champions being the team who won the most games.

After some close matches the tournament finished with Witho and Delsy's teams tied on two wins each so it was decided to have a bowl out to determine the winners. The bowl out consisted of every member of each team bowling at a set of stumps and the team who hit the stumps the most times would be the winners. Wessy was the only player to hit the target and Witho's team therefore claimed the trophy.

Pictures taken during the day will be uploaded to the web site as soon as I have been to Boots and got them developed so they should be on here by the end of the week.

A big thank you goes to all of the club members and parents who helped out on the day and in the organisation beforehand.

UNDER 15's RESULT
posted by 'H' on Friday, 11 Jul, 2003

The U15's at long last secured their first, long overdue, league win of the season as we comfortably defeated Cleeve by 34 runs last Monday night, so avoiding a possible league 'whitewash'.

Team strength had been boosted by the return home of some of our 'boarders' for their summer holiday's and with Rhys Davies (57) continuing his impressive form from last season, assisted by Ali Palmer (10) and Simon Hill (8no) we reached 115-8 in our 20 overs.

Good bowling and catching enabled us to keep a tight rein on Cleeve's response and they never really threatened to get near our total as Simon Hill (2-9), Russ Moore (2-22) and Jenny Withers, Tom Bond and Sam Honeywill with one apiece restricted their reply to 81-8.

UNDER 13's RESULTS
posted by Statto on Friday, 11 Jul, 2003

The Under 13's have won their last two league matches to bring their record for the season to four wins and four losses.

They played Barrow Gurney at home last week and defeated them by 36 runs. Haydon Lyons scored his second fifty of the season in our huge total of 112-3 and George Powell returned the best bowling figures of 2-5 to restrict Barrow Gurney to 76-8 in their reply.

They then played Optimists & Clifton this week and won by 58 runs in a low scoring match. C Goldsborough top scored with 22 in our total of 95-9 and great bowling from Angus Yard (3-8) and Jack Lyons (2-9) ensured that Optimists fell well short of the winning target as they were dismissed for just 37.

SHIRE SIXES
posted by Statto on Thursday, 10 Jul, 2003

We won our semi final clash with Portishead tonight by the comfortable margin of 35 runs.

We batted first and posted the highest score of the tournament with a massive 81-3 in our allotted five overs. Byo led the way with 33, Boardy scored 27 not out, Wobble chipped in with 13 not out and Wessy scored seven.

Portishead could only manage 46-5 in reply with Byo taking 1-5, Wobble 1-9, Huddy 1-11, Statto 1-12 and Wessy 0-4.

Twyford House defeated Failand & Portbury in the other semi final to set up an exciting final and it certainly didn't disappoint as both teams were very evenly matched and it went down to the wire.

Byo won the toss and asked Twyford to bat first. They scored a competitive 58-1 in their allotted five overs with Byo being the only wicket taker with 1-10, Statto took 0-7, Huddy 0-9, Wobble 0-11 and Wessy 0-16.

The run chase got off to a good start with Wessy and Boardy hitting some great shots but Wessy was then dismissed for 15 and Byo went for four shortly afterwards which saw the runs start to dry up. Boardy and Wobble got the score up to 44-2 with one over to go and with 15 needed off the last over the match was in the balance. Some great shots from Boardy saw 14 runs scored from the first five balls which meant that we needed just one more from the last ball to win. Unfortunately Wobble was run out as they tried to scramble a single and with the scores level Twyford won by virtue of having lost fewer wickets. Boardy ended up on 35 not out and Wobble was two not out.

It was a disappointing end to a great game but the lads did brilliantly to get to the final and can feel very proud of themselves.

SHIRE SIXES
posted by Statto on Wednesday, 9 Jul, 2003

We defeated Shirehampton by five wickets tonight to set up a semi-final clash with Portishead tomorrow at 6.40pm.

Shirehampton batted first and were restricted to just 44-4 in their allotted five overs by some fine bowling and fielding. Wessy returned figures of 1-3, Andy Nairn 1-5, Statto 1-7, Byo 1-12 and Huddy 0-12.

We then knocked off the runs with four balls to spare as Wessy scored 24 not out, Nairny 12 not out and Byo nine.

SHIRE SIXES
posted by Statto on Tuesday, 8 Jul, 2003

The first round of the Shirehampton sixes was played tonight and we comfortably defeated United Banks by 25 runs which means that we play the hosts in the second round tomorrow night at 8pm.

We batted first and scored an impressive 69-2 in our five overs with Byo scoring the majority of the runs with 47 off 19 balls, Boardy scored 13 from six and Andy Nairn was nine not out from five.

Everybody bowled well to restrict United Banks to 44 all out, with Boardy picking up figures of 2-7, Pazza 1-3, Byo 1-9, Nairny 1-14 and Huddy 0-10.

WEEKEND RESULTS
posted by Statto on Sunday, 6 Jul, 2003

The 1st XI bounced back from their heavy defeat last week with a comfortable five wicket victory over St George.

Wessy won the toss and elected to bowl. His decision turned out to be a great one as top class bowling from Andy Nairn (5-30) and Huddy (5-35) ripped through the St George batting to dismiss them for just 66 in the 23rd over. Five of the dismissals were bowled and three were LBW which is testament to how straight both of them bowled.

The modest target of 67 looked within easy reach when Boardy (7) hit the first ball he faced out of the ground but he fell soon afterwards and Ian Nairn (1) didn't last long either. A good stand of 18 between Wessy (19) and John Nutt (3) saw the total reach 40-2 in the 16th over but three wickets then fell without a run being scored and things started to look a bit dodgy. Byo (21*) and Buckers (4*) both batted sensibly from that point on and ensured that no further wickets were lost before the victory target was reached in the 26th over.

The 2nd XI recorded another maximum point victory against Old Down to consolidate their position at the top of division two.

Bodger won the toss again and decided to bat. Robbo (58 from 62 balls) got us off to a quick start and his good work was followed up by maiden league fifties from both Wobble (66) and James Hemming (54) as we rattled up a huge 222-6 in our allotted 45 overs.

Despite a 71 run opening partnership from Old Down wickets fell regularly and they were dismissed for 175 in the 37th over. James Hemming capped a fine all round performance with figures of 4-36.

The Sunday XI lost for the third consecutive week as they were defeated by 59 runs at Twyford House.

Twyford House batted first and scored an impressive 206-8 in their allotted 40 overs with Jenny Withers (2-26) and Ronaldo (2-31) being the pick of the bowlers.

The run chase got off to a bad start as the top five batsmen were dismissed with just 50 on the board but a great partnership of 59 between Huddy (50*) and Jenny Withers (26) ensured that we reached a respectable 147-7 when the overs ran out.

UNDER 15's
posted by 'H' on Thursday, 3 Jul, 2003

The U15's had their closest game yet in a very keenly contested encounter with Clevedon on Monday night at the Bartons, going down to a 3 wicket defeat with only three balls left. The game could have gone either way and produced some very entertaining cricket despite the rain sodden conditions.

We batted first and thanks to a powerfull innings from Lee Mansfield (42) and an opening stand of 59 with Sam Honeywill (8) we reached a total of 85-7, which was a little disappointing given such a good start and our lower order batsmen being unable to capitalise on this due, in fairness, to some excellent bowling and fielding by Clevedon in the latter part of our innings.

Clevedon steadily built their innings and despite being behind the required run rate for most of it and losing a steady flow of wickets to Jenny Withers (1-19); Lee Mansfield (2-20); Russ Moore (2-23) and Tom Bond (1-21) plus a run out we could just not get the breakthroughs needed in such tight games and thanks to Chapman (17); Bates (14) and Hogarth (15no) Clevedon claimed victory with just 3 balls to spare.

B&D CUP RESULT
posted by Statto on Wednesday, 2 Jul, 2003

We were knocked out of the B&D cup by Knowle tonight but certainly made them work hard for their four wicket win.

The match was reduced to 16 overs a side because of rain and Wessy won the toss and elected to bat. Boardy (27) got us off to a good start but three run outs stopped the innings from gaining any momentum before Wessy (34) smashed 14 runs from the last over to take the total to a challenging 92-7 in our allotted overs.

Knowle started well and were cruising along at 54-1 in the eighth over but an excellent spell of 2-15 in four overs from Byo saw them pegged back and then a couple of excellent run outs by Huddy and James Hemming reduced them to 75-6 with three overs to go. An upset looked as though it could be on the cards but the Knowle batsmen kept their heads and knocked off the remaining runs with 11 balls to spare.
