The 1st XI's winning run came crashing to an end at Chipping Sodbury on Saturday as we were on the wrong end of a 111 run thumping. Wessy won the toss for the first time in four weeks and put Chipping Sodbury into bat. The Chipping batsmen dominated from virtually the first ball and 54 was added for the first wicket before Butchy (1-26) made the breakthrough in the 12th over. A third wicket partnership of 60 saw the total reach 118-3 in the 27th over but a mini collapse had Chipping pegged back to 131-6 in the 32nd over. A late flurry of hitting saw the score reach 211-7 after 45 overs with Huddy being the pick of the bowlers with 3-57 and Byo (1-39) and Andy Nairn (1-57) being the other wicket takers. The run chase never got going as the fiery opening pair of Toghill and Penfold quickly rattled through the top order to leave us at 40-6 in the 15th over. A sensible innings of 14 from John Nutt, together with a solid innings of 15 from Huddy and a brutal 19 ball 26 from Byo took the total up to 100 before Buckers (8) was the last man out in the 28th over. The 2nd XI won their top of the table clash against Hengrove to regain their spot at the top. Bodger won the toss and asked Hengrove to bat. They scored a very competitive 166 before their last batsman was run out with just one ball of the innings to go. Sean Donovan continued his excellent form with the ball to pick up 4-41 and was ably supported by Hazzo (2-33). Bodger ensured that the teams poor batting display of last week was not repeated by leading the way with a true captains knock of 61. He was helped in the task by Delsy (30) and Robbo, who scored 35 not out from just 13 deliveries. The Sunday XI were involved in a high scoring encounter at Frenchay but despite a brave fight to the end suffered a 32 run defeat. Frenchay batted first and scored a massive 258-5 in their allotted 40 overs thanks to the 114 scored by their South African professional who showed his considerable batting skills by hitting us all around the park before Byo (1-45) trapped him LBW. Huddy (1-33) and James Hemming (1-53) both bowled well without any luck. The run chase got off to a bad start with Byo and Jon Withers both back in the pavilion by the fourth over but a superb knock of 54 from Dave Pople, which was his first fifty for the club, and 39 not out from James Hemming saw us reach a total of 226-7 which was a great effort given the standard of the opposition.

I have just uploaded profiles of John Baber, Murdo Fraser and Jim Saint to the past players section of the web site.
The Under 13's lost a close match against Claverham last Thursday by just seven runs. Claverham batted first and scored an impressive 108-4 in their allotted 20 overs with G Bond finishing with the best figures of 1-10. Despite knocks of 17 from W Brenner and 11 from both C Goldsborough and G Powell we only managed to reach 101-9 when our overs ran out.
The 1st XI extended their winning run to four matches with a convincing seven wicket victory against Cleeve. Cleeve won the toss and decided to bat first on a hard Bartons pitch. This decision backfired almost straight away as Stiff held a sharp catch off Butchy (2-24) to dismiss their professional with the first ball of the third over. This set the tone for the rest of the innings as wickets fell at regular intervals with the highest partnership being a seventh wicket stand of 27 from 86 balls. Andy Nairn (3-24) clean bowled three batsmen and Huddy (3-11) and Byo (2-13) both bowled excellently to dismiss the last batsman with the score on just 76 in the 35th over. Byo goes into the next match on a hat-trick as he took two wickets with the last two balls of his seventh over. The run chase got off to the usual shaky start with Ian Nairn (2) and Tampa (2) back in the pavilion within the first four overs. Wessy's foot injury meant that Boardy (43) went in at number three with Stiff (16*) promoted to number four and between them they put on 66 from just 80 balls to take us to within seven runs of victory. Four byes off the first ball of the 19th over saw us reach the victory target of 77 for the loss of three wickets with Byo (0*) the other not out batsman. The 2nd XI's record breaking run of victories was brought to an end by Stapleton as we went down by 64 runs which knocks us off the top of the league. Stapleton batted first and scored an impressive 169-9 in their allotted 45 overs with Sean Donovan picking up 4-61 and Caddy 2-19. The run chase never really got going and we ended up being dismissed for 105 in the 34th over. Caddy passed the 7,000 run mark for the club in his innings of 22 which was the joint top score with Robbo. The Keith Board memorial match was played against Firebrands today and resulted in a one wicket victory for the hockey club. This annual fixture is always played in a friendly spirit and usually sees a return to the Bartons of some old faces. This year Tripod made his return along with Terry Hegarty and Rich Green. Byo, Tampa and Sagey also turned out for Firebrands. We batted first and posted a huge 209-6 in our 35 overs thanks mainly to a brutal innings of 76 from just 59 balls by Boardy and great knocks of 44 and 37 from James and Roger Hemming respectively. Byo bowled excellently to return figures of 2-15 and Rich Green picked up 2-43. Firebrands then knocked off the runs with just 11 balls to spare. Tampa (62) and Byo (59) were the main run scorers and James Hemming returned the best figures of 3-12.
Good news is that I have had a lot of positive feedback from most of you wishing for a mini 2-day tour to Worcester this year in August. Therefore I have spoken to our agent in Worcester '00-Tripod' and have booked Monday 11 & Tuesday 12 August for two games. He has already set up one fixture with Chaddlesley Corbett and is in the process of arranging another one. So those of you who said you were interested please can you confirm that you will definitely be able to make it on either both days or one day on the dates above. Also please confirm if you require overnight accommodation i.e. a tent in Andys' garden!! Due to the low number of games being played & the fairly large provisional interest shown, the first definite 11 names I receive will be given first priority for playing in both matches. So can I ask that if you do commit yourself to coming on tour now then please do not let me down nearer the date, otherwise it could be too late for me to find somebody else to take your place thus possibly jeopardizing the whole tour for everyone else.
Our match against Knowle in the third round of the B&D Cup on 2 July has been switched to their ground because the Bartons is not available that day.
The U15's (67 all out) were still unable to break their losing sequence in league games as they went down to a 47 run defeat at Claverham (114-4) on Monday night. Claverham batted first and were being well contained in the first 10 overs (33-3), but slipshod bowling and fielding in the next 10 overs surrendered the advantage as they scored at 8 runs an over. Adam Burroughs (2-14) and Jenny Withers (1-27) were our wicket takers, the other was a last ball run out. Although we didn't lose a wicket in our first 10 overs (38-0) and were ahead of Claverhams score at the same stage we left ourselves too much to do in the remaining 10 overs and apart from Richard Veaters 26 no-one else made any real scoring impact. In the race for runs we contributed to our downfall with 3 run outs and bad shots reducing us from 51-2 to 67 all out.
The 1st XI maintained their position at the top of the Senior Division with a three wicket victory at Long Ashton today. Wessy lost the toss and the Long Ashton captain decided to bat first. They got off to a good start with the opening pair putting on 47 from 59 balls before Stiff took a smart leg side catch off Andy Nairn. Wickets then tumbled regularly as only two batsmen managed to reach double figures. Nairny (4-39) ended up with his customary four wickets for the match and was ably assisted by Huddy (3-28) and Byo (2-22). A smart run out by Nairny ended the innings in the 39th over with the total on 125. Tampa (9) and Ian Nairn (5) opened the innings and both went cheaply as the Long Ashton opening pair bowled excellently. Wessy (2) was also dismissed quickly to leave the innings in disarray at 19-3 in the 12th over but Sagey (40) and Boardy (39) turned things around in the space of 12 overs as they put on 54 before Boardy was adjudged LBW. Stiff (9) then shared in a stand of 33 with Sagey to take us to within 20 of the victory target and the match was all but over. Andy Nairn was unluckily run out for a duck while backing up and Byo (11*) and Huddy (1*) saw us to victory with eight overs to spare. The 2nd XI continued their domination of the second division with another maximum pointer against Lodway. Bodger won the toss and put Lodway into bat. The usual tight bowling from Seany D (3-27) and Hazzo (2-12) together with a late burst from Robbo (2-14) saw Lodway dismissed within 37 overs for an under par 119. Caddy continued his great form this season by blasting 62 not out from just 66 balls to see us home with over 15 overs to spare. James Hemming also contributed a more than useful 24. The Sunday XI made it three wins out of three on the weekend by pulling off a last ball victory against Bedminster at the Bartons. Bedminster batted first and scored a very competitive 204-6 in their allotted 40 overs with James Hemming picking up figures of 2-42. Chasing over 200 at the Bartons is always tough but thanks to a patient 52 from Bodger and a quick-fire 43 from Byo we reached the target off the last ball of the game with Jon Withers still there on a well compiled 28 not out.

The Under 13's lost a close encounter with Portishead on Thursday night by just five runs. Portishead batted first and scored 99-8 in their allotted 20 overs with J Lyons returning the best figures of 2-10. A fine 55 not out from H Lyons kept us in with a chance of victory but we couldn't quite reach the 100 run target and ended up on 94-3 when the overs ran out.
Our third round opponents have been confirmed as Knowle and we will play them at home on Wednesday, 25 June with the match starting at 6.15pm.
Our second round opponents University Staff couldn't raise a team for tonight's match so we were awarded a walkover and go into the third round draw. We have not received any details on the date of the third round match or who our opponents are but they will be posted on the web site as soon as they are known.
The U15's recorded their first win of the season, defeating East Harptree by 8 wickets, in a very friendly Home game. The opposition had turned up with 14 players and as they had little league experience we allowed them to bat and bowl with that number! Despite this they were only able to muster a total of 38 all out as our bowlers caused havoc. Russ Moore was the star performer taking 5 wickets for 2 runs in 2.4 overs, including a hat-trick, assisted by Adam Crooks who held 5 catches in the match. The required run target was reached in quick time by the 6th over for the loss of 2 wickets just before the rain really came in.

The 1st XI claimed top spot in the Senior Division with a convincing 42 run victory over Bristol Pakistanis. Wessy lost the toss and the Pakistani captain put us into bat on a damp Bartons wicket. We got off to a bright start with Tampa and Ian Nairn smacking 16 runs off the first two overs but things calmed down after that and Ian Nairn (16) was the first to go after finding the extra cover fielder with the score on 28. Wessy (86) then strode out at number three and proceeded to play one of the best knocks of his career to date as he put on 69 for the second wicket with Tampa (27) and 62, from just 70 balls, for the fourth wicket with Andy Nairn (21) before being stumped just 14 runs short of what would have been a well deserved century. The innings was his 52nd score of fifty (together with five centuries) for the 1st XI and took him past the 16,000 run milestone in all matches for the club. Huddy then worked the ball around well in the last few overs to finish with 12 from 13 balls and the innings closed on a very competitive 186-7. Shabir's left arm spin saw him finish with the impressive figures of 5-54. The Pakistani run chase was dominated by bowling hero Shabir, who followed up his five wicket haul by scoring 82 from just 91 balls, but there was no one who could stick around with him and when he was cleaned out by Andy Nairn (4-48) with the score on 129 the match was all but over. Huddy mopped up the tail and goes into the next match on a hat-trick after taking the last two Pakistani wickets with the third and fourth balls of his 13th over to finish with the great figures of 4-54. Butchy (1-16) was the other wicket taker and Boardy accounted for the other batsman with a smart piece of fielding to run him out. The 2nd XI cemented their place at the top of division two with another maximum pointer as they stuffed Frampton Cotterell by 132 runs. This extended their current winning run to seven matches. Bodger lost the toss and we were asked to bat first. We got off to a sticky start and were 28-3 at one stage before Caddy (89) and Dave Pople (30) put on 118 for the fifth wicket which is a new 2nd XI league record. This took the total up to an impressive 204 all out. The usual combination of Seany D (3-24) and Hazzo (4-22) then ripped through the Frampton Cotterell top order and Witho (2-19) and Robbo (1-4) polished off the tail to end the innings with the score on just 72. The Sunday XI were defeated by a strong Clevedon Cavaliers side in a reduced overs match at Dial Hill and went down by 34 runs. Clevedon batted first and scored a very competitive 181-6 from their allotted 35 overs. Huddy bowled brilliantly to finish with figures of 2-15 from his seven overs and was by far the most economical of the bowlers. The run chase started slowly and we were always behind the rate but Byo's quick 62 kept us in with a sniff until the overs ran out with the total still 35 runs short of victory.
The Under 15's have no scheduled game for next Monday 9 June as they are out of the cup so a friendly has been arranged at home against East Harptree Under 15's.
I've uploaded a couple of new player profiles tonight which means that you can now view the statistics for new recruit Johnno and statistics and pictures for Jenny Withers, who is playing regularly for the Sunday XI this year.
The U15's (102-7) failed to stem their loosing sequence on Monday night going down to a 24 run defeat at the hands of Portishead (126-4). However, the batting performance showed an encouraging improvement as we reached 3 figures for the first time this season but the game was lost due to below par fielding. Lee Mansfield on his debut made good bowling and batting contributions and will add more strength to the side and hopefully improve our chances of achieving a win!
Depending on interest from club members I am thinking of resurrecting the Blagdon mini tour to Worcestershire this summer, something that Keith set up some years ago, as I think it is a shame this has not been kept going. I have spoken to our agent in Worcester the great Andy Martin and he reckons he can get us two games against Hagley Hall (Great ground) & Chaddlesley Corbett for sometime in early/mid August. It really is a cracking area of the country to play cricket in and I am sure the guys who have been previously will agree with that. The games will probably be on a Monday and Tuesday which would mean staying in either a hotel/B&B for 1 nights festivities in Worcester or otherwise guys could drive up either each day or for the one game which ever applies, as Worcester is only about 1-1½ hours away from Bristol. I have agreed with Andy that I would suss out any interest first before he starts booking fixture dates so please can you let me know either way whether you are interested or not asap or by Wednesday June 11 at the latest? Also if you are interested let me know whether you are likely to play either one or both games and would want to stay overnight?

The 1st and 2nd XI league tables have now been updated to incorporate the weekends results. They can be viewed by clicking on the links under the relevant team names in the 'latest results and stats' table on the right hand side of the page. I've also uploaded a scanned image of the local cricket report in tonights Evening Post which has a headline about Boardy.
With Blagdon batting first Nailsea always had a difficult time trying to keep up with the pace. Once again Tom took 3 wickets. All the wickets were evenly distributed amongst our players and they all played well. The batting highlight was a terrific stand of 25 between Ed Williams and Eleanor Yard. Nearly all the batsmen kept their wicket intact as we only lost two wickets, and this proved to be decisive to the outcome of the match. There were some cracking "4s" but the best moment of the match was a superb caught and bowled by Tom. The ball was hit with some force and he held on to it right by his head.
The 1st XI recorded their first victory in the Senior Division with a 26 pointer against St Mary Redcliffe to move them into the top half of the table. Wessy lost the toss for the first time this season and stand in Redcliffe skipper Dave Haynes elected to bat. The decision backfired almost straight away as Andy Nairn struck with just the seventh ball of the innings and wickets tumbled at a steady rate from that point on. Great spells from Butchy (3-18), Nairny (3-33) and Huddy (2-41) saw the Redcliffe innings crumble to 62-9 in 25 overs but the last wicket pair of Graham and Sheppard had other ideas about an early tea and proceeded to bat positively for the next 13 overs to take the score up to a respectable 116 all out. The relatively low total being chased saw a change in the batting order and Tampa opened with Ian Nairn as Boardy dropped down the order for the first time in nine years. Tight bowling from Redcliffe's batting heroes Graham and Sheppard saw the run rate struggle to get above one an over and Tampa (3) was dismissed in the seventh over trying to force the pace. Wessy then came to the crease and also found it hard going as the score limped along to 13-1 from 14 overs. Things turned around from that point on however as Nairny counter attacked and Wessy started to find the boundary until Nairny was dismissed for 20 with the score on 44. Boardy then strode out to the crease and took the game away from Redcliffe in the space of ten overs as he blasted 54 from just 55 balls putting on 55 for the third wicket with Wessy (24) in the process. Boardy was then dismissed when the scores were level so it was left to Rich Hughes to hit the winning run with over eight overs to spare. Sagey (7*) was the other not out batsman at the end. The 2nd XI completed their second maximum point victory of the season to remain on top of the division two table and in so doing set a new 2nd XI league record for the most consecutive wins which currently stands at six. Bitton batted first and were dismissed for 146 with the ever reliable Hazzo (3-31) and Jon Withers (3-4) returning the best figures. There were also eight catches taken with Pete Rooney and John Tiley holding two each. Solid batting from James Hemming (27) and Rob Davies (36) saw the run chase get off to a good start and then Delsy (29*) and Robbo (34* from 21 balls) saw us home with five overs to spare. The Sunday XI completed the hat trick of wins on the weekend with a two wicket victory over Temple Cloud. Temple Cloud batted first and were dismissed for a very getable 122. The chief destroyer was Dave Pople (4-4) who was bowling for the first time this season. We reached the victory target in the 32nd over for the loss of eight wickets with Caddy (39) and Bodger (26) being the main contributors. |
