The odds were never going to be in our favour going into this Cup Semi-Final against a strong Cleeve team and despite a determined effort, particularly when bowling, we were defeated by 7 wickets. Being asked to bat first we saw off the opening attack without the loss of a wicket but because of it's accuracy we were pinned down to just 2 runs an over by the 10th over when we suffered our first loss James Roscow (9) at 20-1. The introduction of the spin of Carpenter (3-12) caused a slump to 33-4 by the 15th over but an aggressive hitting display by Jacob Hartrey (25 no) assisted by James Ratcliffe (5 no) boosted the total to 59-4 at the end of 20 overs. This was unlikely to have been seen as that challenging a target by the prolific Cleeve batsmen but an inspired opening spell by Simon Hill (2-10) saw the dangerous Le Mare (4) and then Trinnick (1) back in the pavilion in his first 2 overs... Cleeve 8-2 and on the back foot... Another break-through accounting for Royce (11) was made by Jacob Hartrey (1-13) and Cleeve were still only on 36-3 in their 10th over. Was an upset in prospect? Unfortunately not, as a decisive couple of overs soon afterwards saw 2 crucial catches dropped from the Cleeve's match winners Dent (35 no) and Carpenter (8 no) who then steered them to a comfortable victory by the penultimate ball of the 15 over. The annual fixture against Firebrands in honour of Keith Board always sees the return to the Bartons of a number of former players and this year was no exception with Malcolm Taylor, Neil Westbrook and Craig Sage all turning out. As usual we batted first and as usual Boardy (56) smacked a quick 50 before charitably giving his wicket away. Malcolm Taylor came in at number three and despite not having played for the club since 1998 looked as if he'd never been away as he scored 53 from 69 balls. The same can be said for Neil Westbrook who smacked 22 from just 17 balls. Jimmer (15) and Jon Withers (43* from 36 balls) batted well at the end to get us up to a huge total of 223-7 in our 35 overs. The Firebrands top order was ripped apart in the space of 12 balls as they lost four wickets for five runs to leave them on 24-4. A partnership of 97 between S.Crutchley and Nigel Rushmer got them back in with a chance but another three wickets then fell for the addition of only four runs and the game was all but over. The final total reached 173-9, with G.Armstrong unable to bat because of sun stroke. which meant that we were victorious by 50 runs. Wessy finished with the excellent figures of 4-11, Huddy took 2-16 and Witho (1-14), Neil Westbrook (1-20) and debutant Will Steele (1-37) were the other wicket takers. A A

The younger and less experienced of our U11's were given the opportunity to play an Away friendly game versus a similar comprised Cleeve team and gave a very good account of themselves. They lost only 3 wickets whilst accumulating a total of 286 runs with Craig McAuliffe, George King; Jordan Payne and William Powell all performing particularly well with the bat. As always with the youngsters at the lower end of this age group bowling is not always an easy task and extras bolster the total but we fared better in this respect than Cleeve giving away less runs. The end result was that although we took one less wicket we managed to keep their run total down to 272 runs so winning by 14 runs. Both teams provided an entertaining morning's cricket for all the watching parents and a return fixture is to be arranged at Home in due course. A A

Byo lost the toss for the seventh time in eight matches this season and Cleeve skipper Ken Carpenter asked us to bat first. The innings got off to a bad start with Boardy (2) being dismissed in just the second over but a stand of 41 between Smalls and Wessy put the innings back on track before Smalls (16) mis-timed a pull to mid wicket. Ian Nairn (0) and Tampa (7) came and went quickly before Byo joined Wessy at the crease to share in a 29 run stand for the fifth wicket. After Wessy was dismissed for a typically classy 42 Byo opened his shoulders and hit three huge sixes together with seven fours in a magnificent score of 63 from 63 balls before holing out to deep mid wicket. Jon Withers then batted sensibly to score 25, his highest 1st XI league score so far, and helped by Nairny (9), Buckers (9) and Huddy (10*) got the score up to 200-9 from our allotted 45 overs. The Cleeve innings got off to a slow start due to some great fast bowling from Andy Nairn and excellent line and length stuff from Huddy. Wickets tumbled at regular intervals and the innings collapsed to 48-7 after 20 overs but a stand of 29 for the eighth wicket ensured that Cleeve got up to the 75 run mark and their first batting point. Nairny broke the eighth wicket partnership by bowling Jeff Lewis to complete his second five wicket haul of the season and with Gary Long unable to bat after injuring his knee whilst fielding Ian Nairn took the last Cleeve wicket with his third ball to ensure maximum points. Andy Nairn finished with figures of 5-22, Huddy 3-48 and Ian Nairn 1-1. Huddy's three wickets takes him up to the 300 wicket milestone in all matches for the club where he joins only 15 other players to have achieved this feat. A A

Bodger lost the toss and we were asked to bat first. The innings got off to a bad start as we slumped to 28-4 but a partnership of 62 for the fifth wicket between Caddy and Jimmer (22) got things back on track. Another good partnership of 67 for the seventh wicket between Caddy and Tim Nicholson (38*) took the total to 165 before Caddy was dismissed for 85. Another ten runs were scored after this to take the final total to 175-9 which earned us maximum batting points. The Stapleton run chase never really got going as the opening attack of Seany D and Hazzo took wickets regularly and although six of their batsmen got into double figures no-one went on to score more than 20 as the innings finished in the 36th over with the total on 114. Seany D ended with the excellent figures of 5-40, which was his second five wicket haul of the season, Hazzo took 3-33, Chris Cox took 1-12 and Caddy followed his 85 with 1-27 and also held three catches. This was a close one. Blagdon captain Archie Wall lost the toss and we were put into bat first. We started well enough with a new opening pair of Clayton and Ed who put on 16. We then lost a quick wicket with El being smartly bowled by Wemyss, but she clawed back the runs lost and pushed the score up to 220. Things slowed with Peter, Wesley, Jordan and Adam only adding another 19 before the final pair of Will and Archie. They stormed away hitting six 4s to finish the innings on a terrific 271 for 5 after the twenty overs. This looked good enough except that Hughes smashed the first ball for 4 but Will was having none of that and clattered his wicket with the next delivery. Some ferocious bowling ensured a steady haul of wickets backed up by good fielding restricted Congresbury to 255 for 7 and we finally won with ease. Will Yard was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 18 off 4 overs, while Jack and Clayton grabbed two each at vital moments. A A

Byo lost the toss and the Pakistanis decided to bat first. With Andy Nairn unavailable for the first time this season Smalls was asked to open the attack with Pazza and Pazza found his rhythm straight away as he took two wickets in his third over to leave the Pakistanis in trouble at 19-2. Stands of 31 and 43 for the third and fourth wickets respectively saw the score climb to 93-4 before two more wickets fell within the space of ten balls to leave the innings faltering on 95-6 after 29.1 overs. A stand of 105 from just 84 balls for the seventh wicket between the Pakistani professional Zaheer and Zain then put the Pakistanis in control and the score eventually reached 213-9 after their allotted 45 overs. Pazza's figures of 3-53 don't do him justice as he bowled superbly and Huddy (3-56) and Byo (3-74) also bowled tidily but were let down by some sloppy fielding. Our run chase got off to a good start with Boardy and Smalls putting on 31 before Smalls (12) was run out. Wessy (4) then came and went quickly which saw Ian Nairn, who had dropped down from his usual opening slot, come to the crease to join Boardy. They put on 29 in just 30 balls as Boardy hit two massive sixes and five fours before he holed out to long on for 40 from 41 balls which left us on 66-3 in the 15th over. Wickets followed at regular intervals after that as we tried to keep up with the required run rate and the only partnership of note was between Ian Nairn (19) and Stiff (26) who put on 32 for the sixth wicket. Huddy (12*) and Pazza (3*) ensured we reached 150, and our fourth batting point, before the overs ran out but we ended up 64 runs short of victory which brought our winning start to the season to an end. Zaheer followed up his 83 with the bat to take 3-21 with the ball. A A

Bodger won the toss in this top of the table clash and asked Bishopston to bat first. They reached a huge total of 211-5 in their allotted 45 overs but it could have been worse as they were 172-1 at one stage. The ever reliable Hazzo (3-36) was the pick of the bowlers and Jimmer (1-42) was the other wicket taker. The run chase got off to the worst possible start as our top four batsmen were out with the score on just 21 but a 101 run partnership for the fifth wicket between Jimmer (57*) and Pete Rooney (48) put us back in with a chance but it was not quite enough as we fell 35 runs short of victory when the overs ran out. Pete Rooney's 48 took him past the 500 run mark in all matches for the club. A A

Byo lost the toss for the fifth time in six matches this season and Redcliffe skipper Paul Waters decided to bat first. They reached a competitive total of 124-6 in their allotted 20 overs thanks to a great knock of 61 not out from 64 balls by opener Dave Featherstone. Huddy picked up 3-22 to take him to 20 wickets for the season and Wessy picked up his 50th career wicket in cup matches as he took 1-14. The run chase started slowly with the total only reaching 39-2 after the first ten overs but Byo then injected the necessary change of pace into the innings by hitting two massive sixes in his knock of 33 from 19 balls and Wessy finished things off in style by scoring 25 from 16 balls. Boardy played an uncharacteristic anchor role throughout the innings to top score with 38 from 52 balls which took him past the 1,500 run milestone in cup matches. A A

Due to a mass exodus of our players either on work experience or school trips abroad we are unable to raise a team on the scheduled date for this round next Monday 14 June. Instead it will now be played on the following Monday 21 June, as we have no league game then and Cleeve have been able to re-arrange their league fixture on that date. A A

The U15's were unable to improve on their dismal League form, despite achieving their highest score to date (bolstered again by a high proportion of extras), suffering another defeat at the hands of visitors Uphill. Batting first our early batsmen scored steadily but also lost wickets at regular intervals, nevertheless we were still handily placed by the 10th over on 46-4. James McHeag (10) and Adam Burroughs (12) boosted the run rate in what was looking like a promising middle order partnership until their dismissal by the grandson of our groundsman! - Andy Filer (3-20). As the scoring rate faltered in the closing overs quick runs were sought but resulted in 2 run outs in the process and although we batted the full 20 overs we were restricted to a modest 83-9. There was no quick breakthrough which we needed against Uphill's opening partnership, instead they quickly raced to 32 by the 5th over. T.Rolls (21) was however dismissed in the next over but that was our only success until the 11th over (56-2), although we had managed to stem their run rate slightly. Scoring a further 28 runs in 9 overs was never going to be a problem though, assisted by some sloppy fielding on our part and J.McKay's (38 n.o.) saw to it that this target was reached by the first ball of the 16th over for the loss of just one more wicket. With Butchy out due to injury it was left to Huddy to skipper the team against his old club Clevedon today. We batted first and struggled to get to a competitive total of 153-9 after a slow start. It was only thanks to some late hitting by Dave Pople (25 from 19 balls) and Tim Nicholson (15 from 8 balls) that got us up to that total. Huddy had earlier top scored with 36. Clevedon were never troubled in their run chase despite Witho taking a wicket with the third ball of the innings and they won by six wickets with more than 11 overs to spare. Larry Jarrett-Kerr bowled well to pick up 2-26 on his Sunday debut and Witho (1-18) and Tim Nicholson (1-27) were the other wicket takers. A A

The Blagdon team travelled to Cheddar and notched up another good win. Clayton Davies was captain this week and elected to bat first. He opened again with Tom Blanchard and the pair put on 19 without loss. Jack and Martyn followed and added another 11 against some tight bowling. Will Powell and Adam Martin were told not to lose their wickets and decided the best way to achieve this was to smash everything around the ground. They addded 14 without loss. Runs continued steadily with Peter, George, Alex and Patrick and Blagdon ended on 281 with the loss of only 1 wicket. Cheddar made their intention clear when they started looking for runs straight away. However, two early wickets from Alex and Tom pegged them back a bit. They came back very strongly in the middle order until Jack Tickoo started his spell by clean bowling two batsmen. Cheddar tried countering and with two overs left were still in with a chance. But it proved too much and another 2 wickets fell as they finished with 250 for 6. Blagdon did well in all aspects against a good batting side. A A

Byo lost the toss in this top of the table clash (Almondsbury were top and we were second) and Phil Mortimore, the Almondsbury skipper, decided to bat first. The Almondsbury innings got off to a quick start despite the early loss of Rob Young who was bowled by the ever reliable Gary Paramore for 10. Gary Goodwin and Greg Stephens put on 52 from 84 balls for the second wicket before Paramore struck again to dismiss the dangerous Stephens which left the score on 75-2 after 20 overs. Goodwin and Tommy Armfield batted sensibly to add a further 27 runs for the third wicket before Huddy was brought into the attack and struck twice in seven balls to leave the innings at 105-4 after 29.1 overs. After a further 20 runs had been added for the fifth wicket five wickets fell within the space of seven overs for the addition of just 21 runs to leave the innings faltering on 146-9 after 40 overs. Huddy did most of the damage as he added a further three wickets to his earlier two which completed his seventh five wicket haul for the club. Some good hitting by last man Imran (19 from 13 balls) took the final total to 170 before he was dismissed by Andy Nairn. Huddy ended with the fantastic figures of 5-41, Nairny took 3-53 and Pazza took 2-32. Our run chase got off to a bad start as Ian Nairn (5) was dismissed in the third over with the total on just five but Smalls and Wessy batted brilliantly to put on 94 for the second wicket before Wessy hit a full toss down deep square legs throat after scoring 40. Boardy then hit a rapid 17 and Byo hit 13 before they both holed out to long on which left the score at 140-4 after 36.1 overs. Smalls was happily going about his business at the other end while these wickets were falling and reached his first league fifty for the club from 107 balls. He was eventually dismissed for 67 with just eight needed for victory which brought Andy Nairn (4*) to the crease who knocked off the required runs with Stiff (11*) with more than two overs to spare. Bodger lost the toss and University Staff asked us to bat first. We reached a competitive total of 172-7 thanks to 64 from Caddy and 19 from Jimmer with no other batsman reaching double figures. We also had 45 extras (including 34 wides) to add to the total thanks to some wayward University bowling. The University run chase never really got going and they were dismissed for 104 in the 41st over. Robbo (4-32) followed up last weeks five wicket haul with another four this week and the ever reliable Hazzo, playing in his 50th 2nd XI league match, picked up 4-21 from his 14 overs. The other wicket takers were Butchy who picked up 1-9 before he injured himself and debutant Larry Jarrett-Kerr who impressed with figures of 1-37. A A
