The runs were then knocked off in just 13 overs with George Bond top scoring with 21 not out.

The under 15's played Wrington on Monday night and were defeated by four wickets in a very low scoring encounter.

We batted first and were dismissed for a record low total of 37. Rhys Davies, playing his first match of the season, was the only batsman to get into double figures and ended up scoring over 70% of the runs with a solid 27.

The Wrington batsmen also found the conditions difficult and lost six wickets before the victory target was reached. Jenny Withers was the pick of the bowlers with a return of 3-6 from her five overs.

B&D CUP
posted by Statto on Wednesday, 28 May, 2003

The first round of the B&D cup was played tonight and we comfortably defeated Lodway by eight wickets to set up a second round tie against either University Staff or Alveston.

Wessy lost the toss for the first time this season and Lodway decided to bat. They got off to a good start but Wessy then struck twice in his third over to remove both openers and with Huddy bowling tightly at the other end the run rate slowed up significantly to restrict them to a final total of 110-3 in their allotted 20 overs. Wessy finished with the outstanding figures of 3-14 from his 5 overs and those three wickets means he becomes only the fifth player in the clubs history to achieve the 3000 run/300 wicket double.

The Blagdon reply got off to a solid start with Boardy and Tampa putting on 34 in just 6 overs before Tampa was run out for 8. Johnno (2) then went quickly but a stand of 74 from just 50 balls by Boardy and Wessy saw us home with almost five overs to spare. Boardy ended up with a brutal 78 off 55 balls and Wessy ended on 21 from 24 balls.

WEEKEND RESULTS
posted by Statto on Sunday, 25 May, 2003

The rain eventually subsided enough for the 1st XI to complete their first league match of the season and it resulted in a 15 run defeat at Pak Bristolians.

Wessy won the toss for the second time this season and put Pak Bristolians into bat. The Pakistani openers got off to a quick start by putting on 77 in 95 balls before Byo took the first of his four wickets. The second wicket partnership was then even quicker with 67 being scored from just 66 balls before Ian Nairn broke the partnership with the first of his five wickets. The third wicket to fall was the crucial one of Nadeem who had scored 96 from 79 balls and was looking as though he could take the game away from us but thankfully Huddy held on to a great catch at short third man to send him back to the dressing room. There was little else to come from the Pakistani batting after that and they were eventually dismissed in the last over with the total on 207. Ian Nairn (5-39) finished with his best figures in a Blagdon shirt and Byo finished with 4-59. Andy Nairn (1-54) was the other wicket taker.

The run chase got off to the worst possible start as Boardy was dismissed for a duck to the last ball of the first over and Ian Nairn (5) and Wessy (2) followed shortly afterwards to leave us in all sorts of trouble at 13-3 from six overs. Sagey (10) and Tampa (16) dug in to take the score up to 52-5 and Stiff (34) and Andy Nairn (29) then shared in a sixth wicket stand of 59 from just 61 balls to take the score to 111 in the 32nd over. At this point we still needed another 97 runs from 13 overs to clinch victory. Byo came in at number eight and attacked from the very first ball to score a brilliant 39 from 37 balls (including three huge sixes) as he shared in stands of 18 from 24 balls with Nairny and 47 from 42 balls with Huddy (7) which kept us in with a sniff. When Huddy was dismissed with the score on 176-8 in the 43rd over the required rate had risen to over 10 an over and eventually proved just too much for us as the run chase finished 16 runs short of victory on 192-9. Wobble (7*) and Butchy (2*) were the not out batsman at the end.

The Sunday XI were involved in an exciting low scoring match at the Bartons against Filton Wayfarers and ended up winning by six runs.

We batted first on a damp track and scored 101-5 in our allotted 40 overs. Huddy (43*) and Pete Rooney (29) were the main contributors.

Filton were then dismissed for 95 in the last over with Caddy (3-27), Byo (2-10) and Huddy (2-16) being the pick of the bowlers.

After some serious coaching last Tuesday the Under 11 team bounced back with a convincing win against Congresbury. The final scores Blagdon 265, Congresbury 168.

Top batting performance was from the captain, Will Yard, with 15 not out and Tom Coles weighed in with tremendous bowling of 2-0-3-3. Overall, it was a far better day with almost everyone getting a wicket with their bowling and only 3 dismissals during the batting. A highlight this week was the chocolate cakes baked in the 40-yr old Aga.

Even though the weather did it’s best to ruin the day, our match with Failand Falcons still took place.

Blagdon won the toss and put Failand into bat. Failands reputation as red hot favourites to win the league was soon appreciated as even through driving rain they managed to score a total of 293.

On a rain soaked wicket blagdon were contained for a total of 176. Blagdons best batsmen was George Gillard (11 n.o.).

The U15's re-arranged KO Cup game against Cleeve was played on Wednesday night and resulted in a 31 run defeat for us.

The visitors were contained to a score of 91-5 by another good bowling and fielding performance on our part, with Simon Hill's (3-10) an outstanding effort. However, we have yet to put together a reasonable batting score and fell well short of the target against Cleeve's accurate bowling which only enabled us to muster a total of 60-7 but a defiant batting display by Haydn Lyons (12 n.o) was a highlight of our innings.

So the honours, but not the victory, in this match go to two of our U13's players who will no doubt be featuring some more at this level in future!

The U15's gave a performance of two halves last night in their game versus championship contenders Nailsea. Although suffering a 34 run defeat, at one stage it was by no means a foregone conclusion. Having bowled & fielded with great purpose and accuracy (and being a player short when fielding) we never allowed Nailsea to dominate in the same way as Optimists did the previous week. With 2 wickets each for Tom Bond and Adam Crooks, 1 each for Russ Moore and Adam Burroughs (the latter from a mavellous catch by Jenny Withers) plus a run out we restricted Nailsea to a final total of 94-7.

With an opening partnership of 38 on the board by our 7th over things looked promising but Tom Bond's (25) attacking innings was brought to end with another unfortunate run out. This changed the game and from thereon it went downhill with only a few other batsmen getting on the score card. Although we were not all out until the 20th over the last 9 wickets had fallen for only 22 runs!

Footnote...

It is always nice to hear of a success story and particularly from within your own club so as the Chairman probably feels a little too biased to readily announce this congratulations are in order to Jenny Withers, who having come up through all our youth team levels to date, has had her talents recognised by Somerset Wanderers (The Senior Somerset Womens team). Jenny has been selected to play for them in some coming matches, against teams including members of The England Womens squad. We wish Jenny every success with her mounting cricket achievements.

After two cancelled games the U11’s finally began their season with a visit to Uphill Castle.

Uphill castle batted first and after 20 overs ended with a total score of 230. Blagdon’s best bowling figures were from Steven Huggins (1-1) Jordon Payne (1-2) Ross Mcauliff (1-4) and Tom Coles (1-6).

Blagdon were unable to catch Uphill who bowled very accurately throughout the entire team and we ended with a total score of 200. Blagdon’s best batsmen were William Yard (10 n.o.), Archie Wall (10 n.o.) and Edward Williams (3 n.o.).

WEEKEND RESULTS
posted by Statto on Sunday, 11 May, 2003

For the first time this season all three senior teams played on the weekend although the 1st XI fixture at Almondsbury was abandoned after only one innings had taken place. The other two games resulted in convincing wins of 115 runs by the 2nd XI and seven wickets by the Sunday XI.

The 1st XI's match against Almondsbury saw Wessy, who was playing in his 250th 1st XI league match for the club, win the toss and put them into bat. Tight opening spells from both Nairny (4-52) and Butchy (2-49) saw the run rate kept at a reasonable level and this was backed up by an excellent spell of 3-33 from Huddy who brought the innings to a close with the first ball of the final over with the total on 206.

Unfortunately the heavens then opened and persistent rain meant that our reply couldn't get underway and the match was abandoned.

The 2nd XI ran out comfortable winners against Bohemians at the Bartons with a 115 run victory. We batted first after Bodger won the toss and scored 185-5 in our allotted overs. The main contributions came from new boy Johnno (55), who cracked his maiden fifty for the club, Caddy (42) and Delsy (29*).

The Bohemians run chase was as good as finished in the first few overs as Sean Donovan dismissed the first five batsmen with just 10 runs on the board. This then progressed to 24-8 before a spirited ninth wicket stand of 44 took the final score to a more respectable 70 all out.

The Sunday XI match at Lympsham was reduced to 30 overs a side due to the rain and stand in skipper Sean Donovan won the toss and put them in. They struggled to 119-6 in their allotted overs with Ron Barber being the pick of the bowlers with 2-9 and Jon Withers backing him up well with 2-21.

The run chase started badly when we were reduced to 37-3 but it then became a family affair as James and Roger Hemming made an unbroken stand of 84 for the fourth wicket to take us to victory with three overs to spare. 15 year old James never looked in trouble throughout his 76 ball innings and finished on a superb 50 not out, his first fifty in senior cricket. His slightly older father finished just nine runs short of his own milestone on 41 not out.

UNDER 11's RE-ARRANGEMENT
posted by 'H' on Friday, 9 May, 2003

The Under 11's match on Sunday against Portbury Pirates has been cancelled because they are unable to raise a team, however a last minute re-arrangement has been possible with Uphill Castle Under 11's so we are now playing them AWAY instead, which replaces the original fixture we had
against them on 24th Aug, provided it doesn't rain.

UNDER 15's
posted by 'H' on Wednesday, 7 May, 2003

The U15's suffered a 'baptism of fire' in their opening game at Optimist's on Monday night and were on the receiving end of a hefty 100 run defeat. Early wicket successes in the first 2 overs saw Optimists on 1-2 but this was short lived as their 3rd wicket pairing amassed a partnership of 154 runs, smashing the ball to all parts of the ground, to give them a final total of 155-2 in their 20 overs.

We were never in the hunt for the runs against an equally hostile opening attack and struggled from the opening ball. We had no answer to the speed of Johnson (2-4) or the accuracy of Blakemore (4-10) as they ran through our batting. Aided by two run outs we were reduced to 39-9 by the 13th over but Adam Burroughs (6 n.o. top score!) and Luke Groves (1 n.o.) survived the last 7 overs as we reached 55-9.

FRIENDLY RESULT
posted by Statto on Monday, 5 May, 2003

The customary bank holiday fixture against Bath & Wells Clergy survived the rain and ended in a 5 wicket victory to bring our senior teams their first win of the season.

The Clergy batted first and on a slow low pitch scored a creditable 100 all out. Hazzo was the pick of the bowlers taking 3-1 in just 10 balls to polish off the tail and Ron Barber also bowled well to end with figures of 2-21. Special mention goes to Graham 'Johnno' Johnston who picked up his first wicket for the club in a hostile four over spell that saw him return figures of 1-15.

The run chase began slowly but good batting from Wessy (23) and Tippo (13) ensured that we kept up with the rate and eventually reached the victory target with just under five overs to spare.
