On a cloudy day at the Bartons, Blagdon lost the toss and were asked to
bat first on a damp wicket. Rich Edwards and Ian Nairn started solidly
and were able to pick up runs at a reasonable rate. After Ian Nairns dismissal,
captain Simon Westbrook came to the crease and with Bristol Pakistanis
bowling well, a period of consolidation took place.
When the shackles were broken, everyone around the ground was impressed
as Westbrook decided to treat everyone to a batting masterclass as he
stroked the ball to different parts of the ground. Following Edwards dismissal
for a solid and more than useful 27, the platform had been created for
the Blagdon middle order to make hay. A good partnership between Andy
Nairn and Westbrook took the total to 160 for 3 with 6 overs remaining
but when they both lost their wickets in the 40th over, the pressure was
on the Blagdon tail to try and produce some quick runs. Sensible batting
from Dave Buckland and Paul Hudd pushed the Blagdon total up to 186 for
7 and went to tea feeling quietly confident.
After another fine tea, Bristol Pakistanis came to out to bat and soon
realised how difficult it was to score runs on this slow wicket. Their
first wicket fell to a farcical run out and the second wicket soon followed
after some fine pressure bowling from James Butcher to leave them reeling
at 24 for 2 from 12 overs.
At this point, the Pakistani number 3 started to counter attack with some
success and managed to lose 3 balls over various hedges surrounding the
ground. As long as he remained at the crease, there was always a threat
to the substantial Blagdon score. The introduction of Paul Hudd from the
Rectory Road end brought some success although Shabbir's wicket remained
intact and with it, the Pakistani hopes.
The reintroduction of Andy Nairn from the Pavilion End proved to swing
the balance as he picked up 4 quick wickets including the prize scalp
of Shabbir for an excellent 82 from just 91 balls. The Pakistani tail
tried in wag but Hudd picked up the final 2 wickets to finish off the
innings and provide Blagdon with a second successive victory and top spot
in the league.
