On a hot sunny day at Chipping Sodbury, Blagdon won the toss and decided
to field. The decision proved to be a bad one as the Chipping openers
got off to a flying start scoring 54 from the first 11 overs. However,
following a change of ends from the opening bowlers, 2 quick wickets fell
and Sodbury were 58 for 2.
At this point, Craig Scully joined Steve Clapp and they batted sensibly
to take their team to a strong position before Scully was stumped by Richard
Hughes from Paul Hudds bowling. More wickets fell quickly to slow the
scoring rate, but with Clapp still at the crease, a score in excess of
200 always looked likely. Poor fielding didn’t help the Blagdon
cause and when the 45 overs came to an end, Chipping Sodbury had made
a solid 211 for 7.
After a cracking tea, The Blagdon openers went out to bat in a positive
frame of mind, but after 5 overs, the confidence had been knocked out
of them as they slumped to 13 for 3. Even this long batting line up couldn’t
cope with the pace of John Toghill and the excellent catching and fielding
of the Chipping Sodbury team. More wickets fell in quick succession, and
at 40 for 6, the game was all but over. A brief flurry of boundaries from
Simon Byas allowed Blagdon to reach 100 and even James Butcher who was
injured whilst bowling, managed to have a bat before the final curtain
fell on this timid performance.
This result knocks Blagdon off the top of the Senior Division.
