On a warm sunny day at the Bartons, Blagdon lost the toss and were asked
to field first. Once again, the Blagdon opening attack in the form of
Andy Nairn and James Butcher were in the groove straight away and the
Cleeve batsmen were immediately under pressure.
A smart piece of away swing bowling and an excellent catch from the evergreen
keeper, Richard Hughes, soon dismissed the Cleeve overseas professional,
Parvis Shaikh, and this was followed by a brilliant catch from Paul Hudd
diving away at mid on to remove the other opening bat. Nairn was also
soon in the action, ripping through the middle order with three victims
clean bowled.
When the bowling changes were made, Cleeve might have been forgiven for
thinking they had time to rebuild their innings, but Paul Hudd and Simon
Byas had other ideas. With some very accurate and clever bowling, they
shared the remaining five wickets to leave Cleeve all out for a paltry
76.
The early end to the Cleeve innings meant that Blagdon had to bat before
tea and some good early pressure was applied by the Cleeve bowlers. After
both openers were dismissed with the score on 4, Cleeve were starting
to believe they could win the game. Rich Hughes, promoted up the order
to number 4, joined Jeremy Board at the crease and these two got Blagdons
run quest back on track.
This partnership proved to be decisive as Board rode his luck as he bludgeoned
his way to 43 and Hughes provided the anchor role whilst unleashing the
odd beautiful cover drive. After the partnership had reached 66 from just
80 balls, Board was caught on the boundary and Simon Byas joined Hughes
to score the remaining 7 runs required for victory.
This result means Blagdon remain top of the league for a third successive
week.
