Blagdons visit to Cleeve was equally important for both sides with Cleeve
needing a victory to help keep them up and Blagdon needing to win to maintain
the pressure on Pak Bristolians at the top of the table. Cleeve won the
toss and asked Blagdon to bat first on a good wicket in sunny conditions.
Blagdons openers started well with 47 runs in 15 overs until Ian Nairn
was caught at mid on off the bowling of Steve Dent. Captain Simon Westbrook
joined Edwards and together they accelerated the scoring rate to move
their side to a strong position of 101 in the 29th over before Westbrook
fell LBW for 26 to the accurate Stuart Barnes. This brought Jeremy Board
to the wicket who further accelerated the scoring rate with some strong
hitting while Edwards moved to a fine half century before being caught
at mid off for 58. Simon Byas ensured that the final total was a good
one with some fine strokeplay in his 36 runs and Blagdon finished with
a very competitive 201 for 8 in their allotted 45 overs.
After a fine tea, Cleeve came to the wicket and after some fiery bowling
from Andy Nairn, the opener was caught behind by the experienced Ricky
Hughes and this brought Cleeves overseas player, Parves Shaikh to the
wicket. He played with some class to accelerate the scoring to 61 before
another wicket fell, this time to the off spin of Simon Byas. In the next
over, Cleeve lost two further wickets to fine catches in the slips off
the pace bowling of Nairn but as long as Parves remained, the game was
still in the balance.
An excellent 6th wicket partnership of 57 put Cleeve in a very strong
position but then Ian Nairn was introduced into the attack, he removed
Gostlin for 35 runs and Paul Hudd took the prize wicket of Shaikh with
the next ball clinging onto to fine one handed catch off his own bowling.
This swung the pendulum back in Blagdons favour as the overs and wickets
were running out.
Although there were brief rallies from Dent with 23 and John Hance with
14, Cleeve were eventually bowled out for 172 to leave Blagdon victors
by 29 runs.
News of Pak Bristolians victory away to Redcliffe means that Blagdon need
to win their final league match on Saturday and hope that Pak Bristolians
slip up.
