Blagdons visit to title favourites Twyford House saw the top two teams
competing for pole position in the Bristol and District Senior Division,
going into the final third of the season.
Twyford won the toss and chose to bat on an excellent wicket. Although
they lost Simon Curtis early on to an inswinging yorker from James Butcher,
this brought Ian Blakemore and Derry West together who worked hard to
survive the early onslaught. They built up a massive partnership of 150
which put Twyford in a very strong position at 160 for 1 off 35 overs.
However,
the loss of the classy Ian Blakemore to the wily slow bowling of Ian Nairn
slowed the scoring rate and although captain Neil Hall scored a brisk
23, the remaining batsmen couldn’t take the game out of reach as
they finished on a well constructed 237 for 4.
After Tea, Blagdon knew they were going to have to break a club record
in order to get the runs required and when they lost Richard Edwards for
a duck, they knew it would be an uphill battle. However, Ian Nairn and
captain Simon Westbrook built a superb partnership of 134 playing shots
all around the wicket. They both passed 50 in good time to put Blagdon
in an excellent position to win the game. Nairn looked well set for a
maiden ton until he ran himself out for 67 and Westbrook followed soon
after unluckily caught down the legside for 76. Now the game was back
in the balance with 68 runs required from 11 overs.
With Jeremy Board and Simon Byas at the crease and Ross Sutton bowling
well, the pressure was building up when Board snicked one and was brilliantly
caught by wicketkeeper Andy Brown. Richard Hughes quickly following LBW
first ball and Andy Nairn was also dismissed for his third consecutive
duck in the League.
At
this point, the Simon Byas show started and with awesome effect. After
some scintillating drives off the front foot and some back foot pulls
to square leg for four, he had turned this fascinating cricket match
on its head once more. With 3 overs remaining, 18 runs were still required
but Blagdon were favourites as long as Byas remained at the crease.
As he sent the ball soaring over the pavilion with 2 almighty blows,
the first of which brought him a rapid 50, just 1 run was needed with
9 balls remaining and when Byas deservedly hit the winning run, there
were scenes of great excitement as Blagdon extended their lead at the
top of the Bristol & District Senior Division.
