Blagdon
lost the toss on a fine day at the Bartons and after some deliberation,
the Bedminster skipper asked Blagdon to bat first. This proved to be
a bad decision as Jeremy Board led a blistering assault on the opening
bowlers. They had both been removed from the attack by the time he was
dismissed for 76 off just 61 balls. Simon Westbrook and Mark Sage then
consolidated the innings, the former hitting his 3rd consecutive League
fifty in his usual impressive style. After Westbrooks dismissal for
65, Simon Byas entered the fray and a rapid 50 partnership ensued with
Sage finishing on a majestic 73 not out.
After Tea, Bedminster overseas star batsman Parvais Shaikh played some
classy shots and although 3 wickets went down inside the first 15 overs,
Shaikh was 54 not out in a team score of 77. At this point, the game
was spoilt by a rain interruption and under the ridiculous Bristol and
District League rules, when Bedminster returned to the crease they had
to score the remaining 178 runs for victory off only a further 17 overs.
Understandably, no real attempt was made to score the runs required
and the game whimpered out to a disappointing finish with Bedminster
on 146 for 6.
Nevertheless, another win for Blagdon which maintains their 100% record
at the halfway point of the season.
This game was retrospectively abandoned as a result of an appeal to
the League by Bedminster. It was agreed that the Umpires had not followed
the rules correctly and all the overs should have been completed.
