At
8.25pm on 31 August 2002 in almost total darkness the Blagdon 1st XI
wrote a new chapter in the history of the club by defeating Bedminster
by three runs and therefore clinching the division 1 championship. This
means that next season they will be playing in the B&D senior division
which is the highest level yet attained by the club.
Even Steven Spielberg could not have scripted a more dramatic climax
to the season as top of the table Cleeve lost to Patchway, picking up
just eight points in the process, which meant that Blagdons average
ended up 0.2 points higher than them and ensured that they claimed the
title.
The match started with Blagdon winning the toss and electing to bat.
The decision looked to have back-fired as good bowling reduced them
to 38-5 in just the 12th over. Mark Sage (35) and Richard Hughes (23),
who was playing his first match since 29 June after breaking his foot,
then steadied the ship with a 60 run partnership for the sixth wicket.
The dismissal of Hughes brought Andy Nairn to the crease who played
a blinder of an innings to be last man out for 55 from just 56 balls.
During his stay at the crease he shared in vital partnerships of 19
with Sage, and 50 with Dave Buckland (12) and took the total past the
magical 175 which meant that Blagdon scored maximum batting bonus points.
Nairn then put the Bedminster reply on the back foot by bowling their
opener with the third ball of the innings to pick up his 47th victim
of the summer. Steady partnerships from that point on ensured that Bedminster
were always up with the rate but a devastating spell of bowling from
Paul Hudd (5-48) put the ball firmly in Blagdons court when they were
reduced to 160 for 9 with five overs remaining. It was well past 8pm
at this stage and the light was fading fast which meant that the fielders
were frequently unable to pick up the ball from the bat and it allowed
the last wicket pair to pick up runs that in normal light simply wouldn't
have been scored. They had added 25 runs in 22 balls by the time the
last over was due to be bowled which meant that they needed just 4 runs
from it to end Blagdons promotion dreams. Vice captain Simon Byas was
entrusted to bowl this crucial over and didn't let the side down by
bowling the Bedminster number 10 with the first ball to record figures
of 3-29 and clinch victory by the narrowest of margins.
Congratulations go to all of the players that contributed to such a
fantastic season and in particular to Simon Westbrook for his inspired
leadership throughout.
