Blagdon
travelled to Bishopston on a hot sunny day and were confronted with
a very competitive team who won the toss and elected to bowl on a straw
coloured pitch. The excellent swing bowling of Rob Stone allowed Bishopston
to gain the early initiative and peg Blagdon back to 38 for 3, although
Ian Nairn grafted hard for 45 runs to give Blagdon a chance of a decent
score. A late rally from the tailenders including a brisk 20 from Andy
Nairn took the score up to 147 all out after 45 overs.
After Tea, Bishopston found the early pace of Nairn too hot to handle
and were soon in trouble at 9 for 2. However, the giant Phil Adams and
captain Frank Connolly played very sensibly with a partnership of 54
to put their side back in control. At this point, Paul Hudd joined the
attack and broke the partnership with a wicked inswinger to bowl Adams
for 25 and wrestle Blagdon back into the game. He continued to bowl
well under pressure to finish with excellent figures of 4 for 38 from
15 overs, but Connolly was batting well and had made 48 when he was
adjudged LBW to swing the pendulum yet again. Wickets kept falling and
with the total at 134 for 8, Bishopston still required 14 runs with
just 2 wickets in hand. However, the tailenders held their nerve under
mounting pressure to hit the winning runs in the 43rd over and thus
ending Blagdons winning streak.
