After
two defeats in three weeks, Blagdon needed to bounce back in their fixture
with Bristol Indians. They were without their inspirational captain,
Simon Westbrook with a bad back and leading wicket taker Andy Nairn.
Simon Byas took up the reins as captain and started well by winning
the toss and asking the Indians to bat.
This seemed to be a bad decision as 39 came off the first 6 overs including
the loss of the new ball into a local garden. The spare ball provided
by the Indians appeared to have been chewed by a pack of dogs and was
more square than round, but this helped the Blagdon medium pacers as
wickets started to fall and the run rate slowed. James Butcher was the
early pick of the Blagdon attack with 3 for 29 from 13 overs. Rob Davies
and Simon Byas then continued the good work picking up 3 wickets apiece
to finish off the Indian innings at 155 all out.
After Tea, Blagdon made a brisk start to the run chase with Jeremy Board,
the main aggressor hitting 36, before being bowled by Shabbash with
the score on 60. This brought Rich 'Tampa' Edwards to the crease to
join Ian Nairn and the pair were cruising along when the rain started
to fall. This meant that the batsmen had to increase the run rate which
unfortunately saw the end of Edwards for 14. Mark Sage then joined Nairn
and they increased the run rate further but the umpires had got wet
enough as the rain poured down and had to take the players off with
Blagdon just 26 runs short of victory.
With second placed Cleeve winning with maximum points, the pressure
is mounting on table toppers, Blagdon, with just 4 games to play.
