Cleeve
came to Blagdon in a top of the table clash which did not disappoint.
Cleeve won the toss and asked Blagdon to bat.
The early loss of Jeremy Board gave the away team the initiative but
this was quickly wrestled back by Simon Westbrook and Ian Nairn with
a 72 run partnership and after the dismissal of Westbrook for 34, Mark
Sage and Nairn added a further 40 runs to put Blagdon in a strong position.
However, a mini collapse reduced Blagdon to 121 for 6 and only thanks
to Paul Hudd with useful late runs and Nairn who was finally dismissed
for an intelligent and well paced 75, were Blagdon able to reach 168
for 9 in their 45 overs.
After Tea, the Cleeve openers were both quickly dismissed by James Butcher
and only Mike Haswell playing his first game of the season looked able
to score runs against an accurate Blagdon attack. With the score at
115 for 3, Cleeve looked favourites but Blagdon would not roll over
and the reintroduction of Andy Nairn's pace from the Pavilion end brought
about a collapse of the middle order as Nairn took 4 for 4 in 5 overs
and finished with 5 for 46.
Cleeve, suddenly reduced to 145 for 9 looked doomed, but the last wicket
pair of Steve Dent and Ken Carpenter played sensibly to keep their side
in the hunt and needing seven runs to win of the final over, Dent drove
the first ball for six just inches above the jumping boundary fielder.
With just one run needed, the next four balls were scoreless and then
with one final dramatic swing of the bat, the last ball disappeared
over the boundary to give Cleeve a marvellous victory against the league
leaders.
