Anyone
playing for Blagdon in their game against Old Down on Saturday wouldn't
be blamed for checking their wheels after the game in the firm belief
that they had just come off. Just 4 weeks ago, this Blagdon team were
riding high at the top of Bristol and District League Division 1, but
following their third defeat in four completed matches, Blagdon find
themselves in third place and promotion is now out of their own hands.
On a wet pitch, Old Down won the all important toss and asked Blagdon
to bat first. The early loss of both openers put Old Down in control
and only the fine stroke play of Rich Edwards was able to contend with
the opening bowlers as he hooked his way to his maiden fifty for Blagdon.
Even after the loss of Edwards, Simon Byas and Andy Nairn accelerated
the innings and the final score of 153 all out at Tea was thought to
be very competitive.
After Tea, Andy Nairn kept things tight while James Butcher continued
his recent good form with two quick wickets and the Blagdon wagon was
still on track to stay top of the League, but some fine hitting by the
Old Down middle order saw the pendulum swing back in their favour. The
introduction of Simon Byas brought about the end of the dangerous Gary
Welsher but the Old Down batting still had plenty to offer and even
the reintroduction of paceman Andy Nairn couldn't stem the flow of runs
as Old Down ran out winners with 5 wickets and 12 overs to spare.
Whilst Blagdon have lost their grip on top spot, promotion is still
within their grasp and with three games to play, maximum points must
be sought.
