Blagdon
travelled to Patchway with promotion now out of their hands but knowing
that a win was essential to keep their hopes alive. They won the toss
and chose to bat first on a good pitch.
The early overs saw Jeremy Board hitting several boundaries and the
score raced to 36 for 0 in just 6 overs. Then the top 4 batsmen fell
to LBW decisions and Blagdon were reduced to 48 for 4. Although a mini
recovery thanks to Andy Nairn's rapid 35 saw the scoreboard ticking
quickly along, his dismissal, to an amazing boundary catch, and then
the loss of debutant Paddy Roche meant that 7 wickets had fallen with
just 103 on the board.
The arrival of Paul Hudd to join skipper Simon Westbrook saw a classy
partnership develop and with an impressive burst of boundaries in the
final overs, Blagdon had pushed their score up to a very competitive
196 for 8, Westbrook finishing 57 not out and thus completing an incredible
50th League 50 for the club.
After a very filling tea, the Patchway batsmen came to the crease but
thanks to an awesome spell of fast bowling from Andy Nairn, they were
reduced to 30 for 6 in very quick time (Nairn 5 for 11) and the game
was all but over. Hudd cleaned up the tail with his little dobbers and
Blagdon gained maximum points.
It was later discovered that Bishopston lost their fixture with Bedminster
by 2 runs and Blagdon are now back in a promotion slot with just 2 games
to play.
