Blagdon entertained University Staff on a fine day at the Bartons, knowing that victory was essential to maintain their promotion push. Staff won the toss and asked Blagdon to bat first on a green but dry wicket.

The early loss of Jeremy Board and Simon Byas increased the pressure on the Blagdon batsmen but Mark Sage's rapid 46 ensured they were back on track as he and Ian Nairn put on 74 runs for the 3rd wicket. After Sage's dismissal, Captain Simon Westbrook joined Nairn and together they piled on the runs in a well constructed partnership of 130, only broken by the late dismissal of Nairn for a fine 73. This brought Andy Nairn to the wicket who blasted 14 runs from 7 balls and Blagdon finished on 244 for 4 with Westbrook finishing unbeaten on a classy 79.

After Tea, University Staff started well with a first wicket partnership of 51 but once Andy Nairn had bowled Nick Blundell with an even slower delivery, there was no further threat to the Blagdon total as Simon Byas and Paul Hudd bowled accurately to pick up the other 5 wickets to fall. Paul Bennyworth played some nice shots in his 58 not out as University Staff finished their 45 overs on 164 for 6, to leave Blagdon victors by 80 runs.

With Cleeve (1st) and Bishopston (3rd) both winning, the pressure is on as Blagdon have to win their last game next week away to Bedminster to gain promotion to the Premier division.
