Blagdon, now playing in the Bristol and District Senior Division, the
highest level attained in the history of the club, travelled to Almondsbury
for their first League game of the season, following last weekends washout
at home to St George.
Blagdon won the toss on a very overcast day and asked Almondsbury to bat.
Thanks to a covered wicket, the game was underway immediately, and James
Butcher struck in his first over to put Blagdon in the driving seat. Some
classy batting from Tom Armfield wrestled the initiative back with Almondsbury
until Andy Nairn clean bowled him for 36.
At this stage, the game was evenly poised but new batsman Ryan Edwards
changed that in the space of 30 balls as he bludgeoned his way to 58 with
5 sixes into the Tennis Courts. His controversial downfall came as the
result of a play and a miss, and a stumping as he rehearsed his shot and
dragged his foot from the batting crease. But he had left his side in
a commanding position with the score at 139 for 3 in the 28th over.
However, the introduction of Paul Hudd put the skids on the scoring rate
of the remaining batsmen. This, coupled with the return of Nairn from
the Tennis Court End and the rapid flow of wickets reduced the final total
to 206 all out.
At tea, Blagdon were confident of chasing down this total with their long
batting line up but as the Blagdon openers approached the wicket, the
heavens opened and the match had to be abandoned.
