On a sunny day at the Bartons, Blagdon entertained second placed Almondsbury.
The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first on a dry pitch.
Andy Nairn took a wicket with his first ball and settled quickly into
an excellent line and length. The ensured the Almondsbury batsmen were
constantly under pressure as runs were hard to come by. He soon struck
again to dismiss the dangerous Tommy Armfield and opener Greg Stephens
and when Paul Hudd removed Ryan Edwards with a smart caught and bowled
and had Gary Goodwin LBW, the score was 77 for 6 and Almondsbury were
looking shaky.
However, captain Phil Mortimore and Steve Braund dug in and restored respectability
as they boosted their final score to 178 for 7 after the allotted 45 overs.
Andy Nairn finished with his second successive 5 wickets in an innings
ending up with fine figures of 5 for 31 in 15 overs.
After another splendid Tea, the Blagdon openers set about the run chase
in solid fashion. After a sensible period of seeing off the new ball,
Richard Edwards and Ian Nairn both started playing their shots to accelerate
the scoring rate and bring up their first 100 partnership in the 23rd
over. When Nairn was dubiously dismissed for LBW, he had made 47 and the
smile on his face as he returned to the Pavilion was clear evidence of
his welcome return to form. Edwards was dismissed soon after for a classy
42 which brought Mark Sage and Simon Westbrook together at the crease.
These two experienced men batted excellently to ensure a very comfortable
victory for Blagdon and return them to the top of the League table.
