Blagdon went into this final league game of the season needing to win their game and hoping that Pak Bristolians could lose theirs, in order for Blagdon to have a chance of promotion. Chipping Sodbury were the visitors and it was them that won the toss and asked Blagdon to bat on a dampish track.

Ian Nairn and Rich Edwards survived the early onslaught but then both lost their wickets by the time Blagdon had reached 34 with 15 overs gone. This brought captain Simon Westbrook and Mark Sage to the crease and they forged an excellent partnership to move Blagdon into a useful position but when Sage fell for 27, Jeremy Board was quick to follow and the chances of a decent score looked doubtful. This was compounded when Chipping took the prize wicket of Westbrook to a superb catch off the spin bowling of Rob Wakefield and Blagdon were left on 96 for 5.

However, strength in depth has been the key to Blagdons success this year and this time it took the form of Simon Byas and wicketkeeper Ronald Hughes. Together they put on 41 runs in quick time against some good bowling. This left Blagdon on 137 for 6 but then they both lost their wickets in quick succession and when Chipping pulled off two direct hit run outs, Blagdon were bowled out for an under par score of 142 at Tea.

After Tea, the Blagdon opening attack of James Butcher and Andy Nairn bowled with supreme accuracy and after they had reeled off 22 overs between them, Sodbury were left in some trouble at 40 for 4. Just 10 runs later, 5 wickets were down as Westbrook and Hughes pulled off a tremendous run out.

This brought Steve Clapp and Rob Bennett together and they got Chipping back into the game with a hardworking partnership of 68 until Paul Hudd pulled off his customary caught and bowled trick with the key wicket of Clapp who made an excellent 52.

This left the game very much in the balance so Westbrook decided to bowl himself for the first time this season, and his medium pacers together with the consistent Hudd applied enough pressure to allow Blagdon to whittle away until 6 runs were required from the final ball of the match with the last pair at the crease, but with Bennett on strike who had already hit one massive six. Westbrook bowled, Bennett drove high in the air, out toward the long off boundary and Sage found himself under the ball and comfortably took the catch to bring Blagdon victory by 5 runs.

This was a fitting end to a successful season for Blagdon and even though Pak Bristolians victory means they get promoted, Blagdon can be proud of their performances in the Senior Division. A special mention should go to Simon Westbrook who has once again led from the front this season. Without his drive, commitment, and work effort, Blagdon could not have achieved this level of success.

Also, thanks to our main sponsors, The Seymour Arms, for their valued support throughout the year and for putting up with us on Saturday and Sunday evenings!
