On a beautiful day, Long Ashton won the toss and chose to bat first on
a dry pitch. Their Australian openers took a liking to the Blagdon opening
bowlers and blasted their way to 47 off just 9 overs. Then two wickets
in one over from the pacey Andy Nairn changed the balance of power.
The introduction of Paul Hudd and Simon Byas saw the run rate dry up as
the wickets steadily fell. Their accurate bowling backed up by good fielding
including three excellent catches from veteran wicketkeeper Richard Hughes
saw Long Ashton bowled out for just 125.
After tea in the style of a Ploughmans Lunch and Jammy Sponge, Blagdon
commenced their run chase in careful fashion. The build up of pressure
from the tidy Long Ashton bowlers soon told as both openers and last weeks
hero and captain Simon Westbrook were back in the pavilion with just 19
on the board after 11 overs.
This brought Jeremy Board to the wicket where he joined Mark Sage and
together they put Blagdons victory charge back on course. A series of
slip drives allowed Board to speed his way to 39 before falling LBW. Fortunately
for the batting side, Sage batted on, although more wickets were falling
around him and when he was finally bowled for a well constructed 40 and
Andy Nairn was unluckily run out at the non strikers end, the score was
115 for 7 and the result was still in some doubt.
This brought Simon Byas and Paul Hudd to the crease and they managed to
score the remaining 11 runs required for victory and secure Blagdons top
position in the League.
