Following two consecutive defeats, Blagdon entertained Long Ashton needing
to win to keep alive their chances of promotion. On a dry, warm day, Long
Ashton won the toss and chose to field. The very first ball saw a huge
appeal and poor Richard Edwards suspiciously given out caught behind.
Captain Simon Westbrook and Ian Nairn then consolidated the innings with
a partnership of 54 before Nairn was given out LBW. This brought “Mr
Reliable” Mark Sage to the wicket who continued to build the innings
expertly with Westbrook until the 35th over when Sage was out to the Ugandan
international Simon Nsubuga for 45.
With the score at 149 for 3, Jeremy Board came to the wicket to see Westbrook
get yet another league 50 before being superbly caught and bowled by John
Sullivan. Veteran Rich Hughes joined Board for what turned out to be an
exhilarating partnership with Board taking centre stage. Whilst Hughes
worked the singles, Board went on a run fest and smashed 8 fours and 7
sixes in a devastating innings of 90 not out off just 46 balls. This boosted
Blagdons final total to an awesome 263 for 4.
After another fine tea including more crispy crackly cakes than you could
wish for, Long Ashton came out to bat and made a steady start to the run
chase until the pace of Andy Nairn clean bowled the opener and got the
number 3 batsman LBW with just 25 runs on the board. With debutant Gary
Paramore keeping things tight at the other end, Long Ashton seemed to
give up the run chase and were just looking for batting points. A useful
spell from Paul Hudd picked up a further 2 wickets and the reintroduction
of Nairn saw him rip through the middle and late order to reduce Long
Ashton to 150 for 9 from their allotted 45 overs. Nairn collected his
fourth 5 wicket haul of the League season finishing with 6 for 45 from
15 overs and helped Blagdon to 2nd place in the League with 2 games remaining.
