Finally, a game has been completed in Blagdons first season in the Bristol
& District Senior Division. Their visit to Pak Bristolians in Whitehall
saw captain Simon Westbrook win the toss and choose to bowl first on a
damp wicket.
The wicket was clearly not a problem for Nadeem who signalled his intentions
early taking 12 from the first over. He played some quality shots during
his innings of 96 and until his dismissal, Pak were on course for a score
in excess of 250. However, the introduction of Simon Byas and Ian Nairn
stemmed the flow of runs and wickets started to tumble in the pursuit
of quick runs. Ian Nairn, bowling clever little 'wobbly' deliveries, collected
5 wickets in his first major bowl for Blagdon, and ensured the final total
of 207 was not out of reach.
After a splendid tea, Blagdon started their run chase in miserable fashion.
They lost both openers and captain Westbrook inside 6 overs to some excellent
seam bowling which put a lot of pressure on the remaining batsmen. However,
the Blagdon middle order showed real mettle and wrestled Blagdon back
from the brink of humiliation to a position of respectability. Then, some
powerful hitting towards the end of the innings from Simon Byas gave Blagdon
a sniff of victory. With 32 required from 3 overs, Paul Hudd was bowled
for 7 by Pak's overseas import, Amol, and in the following over, all rounder
Byas was also bowled for 39 to end Blagdon's valiant attempt.
