Blagdon travelled to St George on a warm but cloudy day looking to get
their season back on track after the previous weeks mauling by Chipping
Sodbury.
Captain Simon Westbrook won the toss and chose to bowl first. Without
the injured James Butcher, Paul Hudd opened the bowling with Andy Nairn
and these two scythed their way through the St George batting in very
impressive style. Nairn’s pace was enough to unsettle the batsmen
whilst Hudd’s accuracy frustrated them at the other end. Wickets
tumbled and after just 22.2 overs, not even halfway through the 45 overs
allotted per side, St George were all out for a dismal 66.
The Blagdon openers came to the crease and when Jeremy Board despatched
his first delivery for 6, you could be forgiven for thinking that a Blagdon
victory was only a few overs away. However, some inept batting from the
top order gave St George a glimmer of hope and with the score at 40 for
5, the game was in the balance.
Widely described as “probably the best number 10 in the League”,
Dave Buckland found himself pumped up the order to number 7 where he joined
Simon Byas at the crease and together these two played very sensibly to
put Blagdon back in control. Byas finished the game with a massive six
back over the bowlers head and out of the ground onto a nearby roof.
The result puts Blagdon into third spot with their next two games against
second and first.
