On a lovely Saturday afternoon, Blagdon played their first Home League
fixture of the season against League Leaders Redcliffe. Blagdon lost the
toss and Redcliffe elected to bat first on a dry pitch.
However, this decision may have been regretted by the Redcliffe skipper
as an awesome display of seam and swing bowling from Andy Nairn and James
Butcher brought about the total capitulation of the Redcliffe top order.
They both picked up 3 wickets and this coupled with an excellent run out
by Dave Buckland left Redcliffe reeling at 49 for 7. The introduction
of Paul Hudd into the bowling attack saw another 2 wickets fall and Redcliffe
were teetering on the brink at 62 for 9.
This brought the last pair to the crease who played very sensibly and
somehow accrued another 54 runs for their side until Spinner Simon Byas
struck to end the innings on an inadequate 116.
After tea, and some fine crispy crackly cakes, Blagdon came to the crease.
The early fall of Rich Edwards to the medium pace bowling of Devon Graham
applied some pressure to the Blagdon batting but a steady partnership
of 38 between Ian Nairn and captain Simon Westbrook restored confidence
until Nairn was dismissed for 20.
This brought Jeremy Board to the wicket who rode his luck early on but
recovered well to blast 54 runs off just 55 balls including 3 mighty sixes.
This all but sealed a Blagdon victory which was set up by that fine opening
spell of bowling from James Butcher and Andy Nairn.
