M.Sage - 200 1st XI league appearances
With Byo being out
of the game due to back problems vice-captain Stiff took over for
the first time in his Blagdon career and asked Almondsbury to bat
first after winning the toss.
Their innings got off to a steady start but Pazza struck the first
blow in the sixth over when Stiff held a catch to dismiss opener Rob
Young for seven. A great piece of fielding by Buckers then saw Gary
Goodwin return to the pavilion for nine as he pulled off an excellent
run out. Greg Stephens looked impressive in his knock of 31 before
he was trapped LBW by Huddy which left the total on 71-4 after 28
overs. Wickets fell steadily after that as the total limped along
to 88-8 after 37.1 overs but a spirited unbroken ninth wicket stand
of 42 between Foot and Smith took the final total to a respectable
130-8 after the allotted 45 overs. Pazza ended with the best figures
of 4-39 and he was ably supported by Andy Nairn (2-34) and Huddy (1-29).
Our run chase got off to a blazing start as Boardy used his new 3lb
3oz bat to great effect by taking 14 runs off the second over but
unfortunately he couldn't maintain the tempo and was dismissed by
Greg Stephens in the next over for the same score. Wessy joined Witho
(who had been promoted to opener for the first time in his 1st XI
career) and they put on a further 35 runs before Wessy was adjudged
LBW for 19 to leave the score at 57-2 after 12.4 overs. Witho (25)
then put on another 18 runs for the third wicket with Ian Nairn before
being caught at point but after that Nairny took command of the Almondsbury
bowling and with the help of twin Andy (2) and Huddy (10*) steered
us to victory with five overs to spare as he finished on 37 not out.
Unfortunately Sagey, who was playing in his 200th 1st XI league match,
was dismissed for a duck before the victory target was reached.
