Statistical notes:
Zaheer reached his 50 from 49 balls (5x4, 1x6)
The Blagdon innings contained one 7 ball over
Byo lost the toss
and the Pakistanis decided to bat first.
With Andy Nairn unavailable for the first time this season Smalls
was asked to open the attack with Pazza and Pazza found his rhythm
straight away as he took two wickets in his third over to leave the
Pakistanis in trouble at 19-2. Stands of 31 and 43 for the third and
fourth wickets respectively saw the score climb to 93-4 before two
more wickets fell within the space of ten balls to leave the innings
faltering on 95-6 after 29.1 overs. A stand of 105 from just 84 balls
for the seventh wicket between the Pakistani professional Zaheer and
Zain then put the Pakistanis in control and the score eventually reached
213-9 after their allotted 45 overs. Pazza's figures of 3-53 don't
do him justice as he bowled superbly and Huddy (3-56) and Byo (3-74)
also bowled tidily but were let down by some sloppy fielding.
Our run chase got off to a good start with Boardy and Smalls putting
on 31 before Smalls (12) was run out. Wessy (4) then came and went
quickly which saw Ian Nairn, who had dropped down from his usual opening
slot, come to the crease to join Boardy. They put on 29 in just 30
balls as Boardy hit two massive sixes and five fours before he holed
out to long on for 40 from 41 balls which left us on 66-3 in the 15th
over. Wickets followed at regular intervals after that as we tried
to keep up with the required run rate and the only partnership of
note was between Ian Nairn (19) and Stiff (26) who put on 32 for the
sixth wicket. Huddy (12*) and Pazza (3*) ensured we reached 150, and
our fourth batting point, before the overs ran out but we ended up
64 runs short of victory which brought our winning start to the season
to an end. Zaheer followed up his 83 with the bat to take 3-21 with
the ball.
