Byo, who was playing
in his 300th match for the club, lost the toss and Bristol Pakistanis
decided to bat first on a very dodgy looking pitch which hadn't been
prepared due to the bad weather during the week.
We made a couple of early breakthroughs to reduce them to 24-2 after
7.2 overs but a stand of 74 for the third wicket between Sajid and
Wasim put the Pakistanis in a commanding position. This was enhanced
with a 66 run partnership for the fourth wicket between Sajid and
their overseas professional Zaheer before Sajid was dismissed by Huddy
for a well made 60 which left the total on 164-4 with six overs remaining.
A great run out by Wobble sent Zaheer back to the pavilion but the
sixth wicket pair of Irfan and Ayub put on 30 runs in just 19 balls
to take the total to 211-5 with one over to go. The last over was
bowled by Huddy and was a very eventful one as Stiff made stumpings
off the first, third and sixth balls to help Huddy bag his second
five-fer of the season and end the Pakistani innings on 213-8. Huddy
finished with the excellent figures of 5-54 and Pazza (1-29) and Nairny
(1-59) were the other wicket takers.
Our run chase got off to a typically exciting start as Boardy hit
the third ball of the innings out of the ground but was unfortunately
caught at cover off the next ball. Tampa was then dismissed for a
duck in the third over which left us in a spot of bother at 7-2 before
Wessy and Ian Nairn brought us back into the game by compiling a steady
27 run partnership for the third wicket until Nairny was caught for
12. This brought his twin Andy to the crease and he smashed the ball
everywhere to reach his first fifty of the season off just 24 balls
which included six fours and three towering sixes. He didn't add to
his score after reaching the fifty mark however and was caught behind
in the 23rd over to leave the score on 96-4. Byo joined Wessy in a
useful 23 run partnership for the fifth wicket but when he was bowled
for 16 the score had reached 119-5 after 29.1 overs and we needed
to score at over six runs an over to reach the victory target. Witho
then played his finest innings for Blagdon to date and along with
Wessy, who accelerated at just the right time, put on 90 runs in only
81 balls for the sixth wicket to take us to within five runs of victory
with over two overs to spare. Witho was unfortunately bowled for 35
in the 43rd over to keep everyone on the edge of their seats and the
tension was increased even further when Stiff was out for a duck just
five balls later which left us needing four to win off nine balls.
Fortunately for us the penultimate ball of the 44th over beat the
batsman, keeper and fielders to race to the boundary for four byes
which took us to victory with just seven balls remaining. Wessy, who
passed the 8,000 run milestone in 1st XI league matches during this
match, batted masterfully throughout his innings to finish on 69 not
out and Huddy (0*) was the other not out batsman at the end.
