Statistical notes:
G.Cambridge reached his 50 from 47 balls (6x4, 1x6)
A.Nairn took his tenth 1st XI league five wicket haul
Milestones reached:
P.Hudd - 200 1st XI league wickets
Byo won the toss
and asked Carsons to bat first.
Their innings got off to a great start as the big hitting Glen Cambridge
and the more subdued Paul Vickery put on 70 for the first wicket before
Vickery was dismissed by Huddy for 16. Cambridge continued to take
the attack to the Blagdon bowlers as he added a further 49 runs to
the total with Carsons' overseas professional Asif Bala before attempting
one big hit too many and holed out to Wessy for an excellent 80 off
just 75 balls. Bala was dismissed shortly afterwards for 21 which
left the total on 120-3 after 31.5 overs. With wickets falling regularly
after that point Ian Rosling batted well to score 31 from 32 balls
before being bowled by Byo in the last over. The final total reached
176-9 after the allotted 45 overs with Andy Nairn picking up his third
five wicket haul of the season as he finished with figures of 5-71.
He was backed up well by Huddy (3-60) and Byo (1-0). Huddy's three
wickets took him past the 200 wicket mark in 1st XI league matches.
Our run chase got off to a disasterous start as Boardy (0) was dismissed
with the first legitimate delivery of the innings after the first
ball was a wide. Wessy and Smalls (3) then put on 15 for the second
wicket before Wessy was stumped by Cambridge for 12 which left us
on 16-2 after 7.2 overs. This soon became 16-4 and then 22-7 after
13 overs as Asif Bala ripped the heart out of the innings with a devastating
spell of 5-10 from seven overs. Tampa (18) and Witho batted well to
put on 24 for the eighth wicket before Witho (7) was bowled by Bala
and the last wicket fell with the score on 52 a few overs later after
Graham Knight held two caught and bowled chances.
After the match had finished there were a number of frantic phone
calls made to Cleeve to see how Twyford House were doing, as they
still needed to beat Cleeve to overtake us, but unfortunately for
us the news came through that they had pulled off a tense victory
which meant that they were crowned champions and we were to finish
runners-up for the second year in a row. Congratulations go to the
Twyford boys who deserve to go up after so many years of nearly making
it.
Despite todays result and the fact that Twyford won it has been a
great season for the club and congratulations go to Byo who skippered
the team so well throughout the season and to all of the players who
represented the club in the 15 matches played.
