Byo lost the toss
and Cleeve skipper Ken Carpenter asked us to bat first.
The innings got off to a bad start when Tampa was dismissed for six
in just the third over but a steady partnership of 33 for the second
wicket between Smalls (17) and Wessy got the innings back on track.
Wessy then shared in partnerships of 42 and 54 with Ian Nairn (14)
and Andy Nairn (28) respectively to take the score to 139-4 after
39.4 overs. Wessy was eventually dismissed for 77 (his third half
century in his last four innings) before Sagey (12*) and Witho (16)
put on a rapid 32 runs from just 19 balls to take the final total
to a competitive 189-7 from our allotted 45 overs.
The Cleeve run chase got off to a blistering start thanks to some
hard hitting by Gary Long but after he was dismissed by Byo for 45
two more wickets fell within the space of 13 balls to leave the score
at 61-3 after 17.3 overs. Tight bowling from Pazza meant that the
Cleeve batsman couldn't keep up with the required run rate and the
score had reached just 97 when the seventh wicket fell in the 36th
over. A spirited partnership of 56 from 53 balls between Steve Dent
(33) and Mike Carpenter (29) ensured Cleeve collected their fourth
batting point and the innings closed on 158-8 to leave us victorious
by 31 runs. Byo was the pick of the bowlers with 4-35 and he was ably
assisted by Andy Nairn (2-50), Pazza (1-29) and Huddy (1-32). Byo's
four wicket haul took him past the 150 wicket mark in 1st XI league
matches.
