Milestones reached:
Jon.Withers - 150 appearances in all matches for the club
Byo won the toss
and decided to bat first.
The innings got off to a flying start with the opening pair of Boardy
and Smalls putting on 39 in seven overs before Boardy played on for
12. Wessy then joined Smalls at the wicket and they kept up the pace
with a fantastic partnership of 123 from 152 balls before Smalls was
bowled for 77 (his highest score for the club so far). With the total
on 162-2 in just the 31st over a huge total was on the cards and Wessy
and Ian Nairn maintained the run rate with a 50 run partnership for
the third wicket before Wessy was dismissed for 77. Byo (1) perished
in the search for quick runs before Nairny and Stiff were involved
in a blistering 52 run partnership from 25 balls until Nairny was
bowled for 58. Stiff (16*) and Witho (1*) added a further five runs
to the total to bring the innings to a close on 273-5 after our allotted
45 overs. This was the highest ever total scored at the Bartons, beating
the previous best of 264 against St George in 1996.
With our two regular opening bowlers Andy Nairn and Pazza away on
holiday it was left to Huddy and Byo to try and stop the Stoke Bishop
run chase from getting off to a good start and that is exactly what
they did as the run rate never got above three an over. Wickets also
fell steadily and the score had reached 77-4 after 22.1 overs before
Bishop collapsed dramatically and lost their last six wickets in just
3.4 overs for the addition of only 28 runs. Byo finished with the
excellent figures of 5-63, Smalls took 3-15 and there were two excellent
run outs by Boardy and Witho. The final total of 105 meant that we
had won by 168 runs which was our biggest victory margin in a 1st
XI league match, beating the previous best of 158 runs against Horfield
in 1995.
