Statistical notes:
R.Sutton's figures were the joint best against us in our 30 year 1st XI league history
Byo lost the toss
(as usual) and Twyford skipper Neil Hall decided to bat first.
Things got off to a good start for us as Andy Nairn bowled the in-form
Mark Fowler for just four in the third over but the second wicket
partnership between Derry West (16) and Ian Blakemore added 40 to
the total before West was adjudged LBW to Nairny. Blakemore (23) followed
him back to the pavilion just seven balls later when he became Nairny's
third victim to leave the score on 50-3 after 18.1 overs. The middle
order were dismissed relatively cheaply as Simon Curtis (1), Robin
Moore (13) and skipper Neil Hall (3) all went within the space of
seven overs making the score 80-6 after 30.1 overs. A solid knock
of 31 from Ross Sutton combined with steady batting from Andy Brown
(10), Mark Wilson (10), Andy Kemp (11*) and Gary Ball (7) took the
total up to 141 before Byo bowled Ball with the penultimate delivery
of the innings to secure the maximum bowling points. Nairny finished
with the excellent figures of 4-43, Huddy took 3-38, Pazza 2-25 and
Byo 1-24.
Our run chase got off to a bad start as Boardy was dismissed with
the eighth ball of the innings for a duck but Tampa and Wessy then
batted steadily to add 24 for the second wicket before Tampa was bowled
for 13. Wessy (10) and Ian Nairn (5) shared in a 15 run partnership
for the third wicket before they, along with Stiff (0), were dismissed
within the space of 13 deliveries to leave the score on a dismal 42-5
after 17.1 overs with Ross Sutton taking all five wickets. Partnerships
of 14 between Byo (20) and Huddy (4) and 17 between Byo and Andy Nairn
for the sixth and seventh wickets respectively took the score up to
73-7 in the 26th over but things were looking bleak. The eighth wicket
partnership won us the game last week and it did its best again this
week as 47 runs were added by Andy Nairn (34) and Witho before Nairny
was dismissed by the under-rated Gary Ball. The victory equation was
therefore down to 22 runs from 9.5 overs with two wickets remaining
and after 12 had been added for the ninth wicket by Witho and Buckers
the game was within our grasp, however Ross Sutton had other ideas
and bowled Witho for 15 and then trapped Pazza LBW for a duck within
the space of five balls to end our innings ten runs short of victory
on 132.
Sutton ended up with figures of 8-40 which equalled the best bowling
against us in our 30 year 1st XI league history. If you put those
eight wickets together with the valuable 31 runs scored when batting
he should be a serious contender for the coveted Evening Post bat
this week.
