After an unprecedented amount of players not being available and only having
ten men there was little expectation for this game. My logic was to win the
toss and bat first to avoid getting hit round the park all afternoon. I managed
to do this but surprisingly it all turned out rather nicely.
The usual steady start from Roger although not exhilarating produced an adequate 25 runs. Burroughs unfortunately could not extend on his fantastic 89 on Saturday and looked tired when he got bowled for a disappointing 4 runs. This was followed by Rohit and I who managed to take advantage of the change bowlers and had a partnership of 81 runs with a reasonable strike rate. After a number of wickets fell Rooney came in to survive an almost unplayable ball (due to the pitch keeping low) and managed to get a solid 20 runs. So there it was with a good batting performance, helped by a number of extras, we managed to post a more than competitive score of 203 runs.
The mood in our dressing room was positive and it was clear when getting the tea from the opposition’s dressing room that we had the psychological advantage of having runs on the board. Good tight bowling from Rooney and Donovan from the start set the precedent for subsequent bowlers while applying the pressure on the opposition. A special mention goes to Alex Fudge who on his senior debut managed to get an impressive 2 wickets for only 18 runs after bowling 8 Overs. This was backed up by in the “block hole” bowling from Burroughs and Rohit who kept the runs down. Only 10 extras were given away and this was a great bowling performance, so well done!
In addition to the bowling, the fielding was good. Excellent walking in skills from Oscar Fowles enabled him to bag two crucial catches. Tippo also known as the ‘Gator’ snapped a quality catch at Point to dismiss their number 1 bat. Moreover, a special mention goes out to Graham Withers who with a bad back played two games this weekend and helped Sean and I when the chips were down.
All in all it was a great day with a lot of positives. Not only did we win but we won by 109 runs! Hopefully this will continue in the future.
Best
Jimmer
