UNDER 11's - SEASON REVIEW

Team Manager - Lionel Harrison
Assistant Manager - Ian Yard
Coach - Ralph Mitchell

It was never expected that our much less experienced U11's would this season emulate our previous seasons success. As the final league table below shows they, however, put up a very creditable performance, finishing 5th, winning & losing 5 games and tying 1. Every opportunity was taken to play 24 overs games (ie a team of 12) and enable our many U11 members to be given a game. In some cases we provided our opposition with some of our players in order to make up the teams to 12 or just to ensure that the game was staged.

Failand & Portbury were the eventual League winners and it was against them that we lost our first game of the season and also recorded our only score to fall below 200. We did not bat well although it was moreso a case of batting as well as we were allowed to. A further defeat followed at the hands of Cleeve where we failed to take many wickets and were flattered by a scoreline mostly provided by their bad bowling.

Our first victory came at Portishead where Simon Hill took an impressive 4 wickets for 1 run and our batting was better. Next on to Wrington where Arron Ford setup our second win with a 3 wickets for 1 run performance. A surprisingly weak W-S-M provided us with our first 300 score of the season and our biggest winning margin of 103 runs as our bowlers took 12 wickets. In the closest and most exciting game of the season we tied with Uphill Castle off the last ball of our innings with Lloyd Davies (15no) working a miracle for us in the last over.

Our winning spell came to an end against Nailsea (League runners up) as their batting withstood our best bowling attempts and we had no significant scoring efforts. This was followed by our most abysmal game of the season against Claverham, losing our highest number of wickets -13, matched by equally lack luster bowling which gifted them the game.

Some composure was restored with a narrow win over Congresbury in a tightly contested game which was won in the last couple of overs with some solid batting from Lloyd Davies and Chris Goldsbrough. Another win was secured at a much weakened Cheddar as we notched up our highest league score of 306 with four batsmen getting double figures. The final game was a disappointing climax as we just failed to beat Clevedon in another close match but Lloyd Davies's customary last over heroics were not quite enough to win us this game.

We played one other friendly game at U10 level against Cleeve in which we also scored in excess of 300, that person Lloyd again was 27no, but the limelight was stolen by Angus Yard with a hat trick of victims, all bowled. Hat tricks are rare achievements at any level of cricket so Angus receives a special award for this.

Overall although we had a good team spirit we lacked consistency of performance which in part could be accounted for because of the number of players we were rotating into the squad. Bowlers achieved an average of nearly seven wickets per game whereas batsmen lost an average of nearly 8 wickets per game, which tells its own story! Next season we only lose 4 of the squad (in red in the list below) who will no longer be eligible to play in the U-11 age group, so we have another season in which to consolidate and hone the skills, which they have learnt during this season. They ought to be able to do better in the 2002 season to which we look forward with anticipation.

Finally my special thanks to Ian Yard for his support, Ralph Mitchell (Coach), Jan Lyons for her administration behind the scenes and to all the parents who assisted with the refreshment duties, transportation & scoring. We must not forget Fid either for ground preparation and of course our youth sponsors as shown above.
