MATCH REPORT
This game was expected to prove one of our more sternest tests as Cheddar
were runners-up in the U13’s league last season and still had
a formidable team this season.
This also proved to be the last pairing of Rhys Davies (Captain) &
Archie Stead as our openers and they were obviously determined to go
out in style despite facing one of the best U13’s league bowlers
and all rounder in J.Butler. They did not disappoint, withstanding his
initial onslaught, and creating yet another record with their highest
stand of 119 for the 1st wicket before Rhys (67) did become a bowled
victim of Butler’s when he returned for his second spell in the
17th over. Garth Tiley came in to join Archie for the remaining 20 or
so balls and between them added a further 25 runs to take our total
to 144-1. Archie, who batted the entire innings, finishing 39no with
Garth contributing a swashbuckling 16no. Another big total but would
it be enough of a buffer to allow for our now common place bowling lapses?
The Manager is beginning to wonder if there has not been a deliberate
attempt through the season to reduce him to a bag of nerves given the
unpredictable roller coaster of accuracy produced!.
True to form from the first ball ‘no ball’ this pattern
looked set to continue in a game we could ill afford to be so generous.
Perhaps we should be renamed the ‘Benevolent Cricket Club’!.
Although there were 2 wickets taken in our first 2 overs, by Tom Bond
and Lloyd Davies that only hastened the arrival at the crease of the
prolific & stylish J.Butler who has the ability to turn any game
on its head. We yet again assisted the process by our continuing bowling
inaccuracies. Although at the start of the 8th over Cheddar lost a further
wicket, taken by Garth Tiley (1-20) the 65-3 scored was well up with
the required run rate and Butler was looking well set for a big score.
Come the end of the 11th over and 85 on the board without further loss
the odds were decidedly moving in Cheddar’s favour. However the
game was changed with the introduction in the 12th over of Archie Stead
to the attack. Archie chose exactly the right moment to produce his
best bowling performance of the season, crucially getting Butler (41)
caught behind off his second ball (by George Gillard in his impressive
debut game as wicket keeper). This was followed up with a further 3
victims, all bowled, in his next 3 overs, giving final figures of (4-18).
2 Cheddar batsmen also ran themselves out in the quest for runs and
Tom Bond (2-32) wrapped up their innings with a final wicket in the
19th over. 7 wickets for 40 runs in 7 overs was a excellent recovery,
when the game had looked to be slipping away, but 50 bowling extras
out of their total of 125 runs again tells how close we came to gifting
the opposition the game, but thankfully we held on by just 19 runs!
One more victory (9) and now only 3 games to go.
