MATCH REPORT
We entered this game with a couple of walking wounded, Archie Stead
back off holiday with a stomach upset and Arron Ford with a injured
strapped up left wrist. Crusaders, however, had their own problems and
were fielding a weakened team which included 4 or 5 U11 players and
with agreement one of the players from their U13 first team squad (Comets)
to make up numbers! We also fielded one of our U11 players Lloyd Davies.
This proved to be a match winning selection. Batting first and opening
with his brother and Captain, Rhys,.. Lloyd batted almost the entire
innings, bar 2 balls, and contributed an impressive 42 runs to an opening
partnership of 102, in which Rhys scored 49 before falling victim to
a plumb lbw in the 15th over. This created one, if not possibly two,
U13's records, the first century opening partnership and the first by
two brothers. An under the weather Archie came to the crease for the
final 5 overs but even so managed an undefeated 18, in our final total
of 134-2. Tom Bond did not have time in his 2 balls at the end of the
innings to get off the mark.
Crusaders got off to a good start and had 27 -1 on the board after only
5 overs (Alex Wall 1-18), assisted by what continues to be a very worrying
trend of our bowlers inability to maintain accuracy with wides and no
balls becoming ever more frequent. Fortunately, Simon Hill returned
to his more consistent style and regained some control of the situation
with a 3 over spell of 2-4, leaving the opposition on 41-3 after 10
overs. Crusaders were well behind the required run rate at this stage
so a further 5 bowlers were able to be given one over spells. The game
petered out as the dusk descended around the ground and in the poor
light Archie Stead was brought back on with his spinners to complete
his 5 overs (0-23). Crusaders had almost doubled their total without
further loss to 79-3 by the close with N.Roberts (20no) batting throughout
their innings. Their biggest scorer, however, was 41 extras and although
we had a winning margin of 55 runs, we cannot afford to continue to
concede this amount of runs and expect to win games, especially if our
batting totals, which have been exceptionally high, falter in the coming
games.
Another victory but still 6 games to play and win!
