MATCH REPORT
Last season in the equivalent game played at Clevedon we won by 90 runs.
To surpass that was a little beyond our expectations but the winning
margin of 101 runs did just that in a game that in the end was very
one sided.
Batting first Archie Stead & Rhys Davies were contained by some accurate
bowling to an average of 4 runs an over by the Clevedon attack until
the twelfth over to when Rhys (22) fell to a catch at the second attempt
of a blistering square leg shot with the score on 53-1. Ben Lyons then
joined Archie and the pace was immediately quickened as a series of
4 were dispatched around the ground. In the next 6 overs a further 45
runs were added with Archie opening his shoulders too. Ben (28) became
Clevedon's second victim, stumped attempting a big 6 hit in the 18th
over, with the total on 98-1. Tom Bond was left with a couple of overs
to maintain the tempo with Archie. This they did adding another 21 runs,
assisted by some wayward Clevedon fielding, so we reached our highest
league total of the season on 119-2 with Archie (48no) narrowly missing
his 50 and Tom undefeated on 7. A formidable target had been set.
As was the case at Weston our bowlers were in a mean mood and Clevedon's
batsmen were under pressure from the first ball which was never relaxed
despite the use of 6 bowlers. At the end of the 4th over the opposition
were reduced to 10-4. Ben Lyons taking 2-2, Garth Tiley 1-6 and a run
out. By the 8th over the position had changed to 17-6 with Archie Stead,
not to be out done by Ben, taking 2-2 also. Another run out in the 9th
over brought the score to 18-6 but this did not prepare us for the ultimate
finishing master piece which came from Adam Burroughs (0-3) as he produced
a hat-trick from the first 3 balls of his over and the games 10th. Only
3 Clevedon batsmen managed to score with Shepherd (9) providing the
only real resistance and half their total of 18. Probably an all time
league low by any youth team against us.
So one more victory but still another 9 games to go and much tougher
opposition to come!
