MATCH REPORT
As with the earlier game on Tuesday, selection of a team was again the
biggest problem for both clubs but we at least each managed to field
11 players, albeit ours containing 4 U11's and Congresbury's a few more.
Batting in his last game for and as Captain of the U13's team Ben Lyons
opened our innings with Garth Tiley. There is always the expectation
that you will see fireworks with these players at the crease but tonight
they came from a different quarter than Ben who was bowled early on
in only the 2nd over for 9. Instead it was Garth who batted the entire
innings, chancing his arm on many occasions and being dropped 3 or 4
times on his way to 88no. He was ably supported by Tom Williams (33no),
given the chance to bat higher in the order, as they recorded a record
2nd wicket partnership of 140. We ended on a total of 152-1, with the
likes of Rhys Davies and Archie Stead not able to enjoy their customary
visit to the crease!
Our batting strength has been a particularly strong feature this season,
which cannot be said about our bowling. Against what was a much weakened
team and little pressure we again failed to maintain bowling accuracy
and although we took 6 wickets, it was 45 extras (admittedly 15 were
byes) that were Congresbury's highest score in their total of 77-6,
with no one in their batting getting double figures as they contributed
just 32 runs. Ben bowed out with one of the better analysis of 1-8 off
4 overs (and took 2 catches) but it was Alex Milward again (1-4) in
3 overs who was the only one of the 8 bowlers used not to concede any
extras - (Oh for more bowlers like him!). Steve Huggins on his U13's
debut took 1-5 in his 2 over spell and as with the other U11's used
at this level looks a good future prospect.
Another victory and now only 4 games to complete the season but this
is now looking a decidedly impossible situation with really only next
week in which to play them as into the bank holiday week and beyond
players availability is considerably stretched.
