MATCH REPORT
The first league game of the season could not have been against much
stronger opposition than Nailsea who were last seasons U13 League champions
having beaten us in their last game of the season to clinch the title.
Were we up to the task this time?
Batting first on a sunny spring evening it initially appeared as though
we were going to falter, as we did not get off to the best of starts.
Garth Tiley succumbed to a full toss in the last ball of the first over
- no heroics for him on this occasion after his efforts last week and
48 in the corresponding game last season! Rhys Davies soon followed
in the 3rd over to an excellent catch at mid wicket which otherwise
would have been 4 runs. Ali Palmer's resistance was short lived and
departed to a poor defensive shot in the 8th over and we were struggling
at 20-3. Ben Lyons (Captain) arrival at the crease proved the turning
point as with Jacob Hartrey stubbornly defending his end 32 runs were
put on in the next 7 overs until Jacob became Nailsea's 4th victim.
Only 5 overs now left and a still somewhat modest 52-4 on the board.
The incoming Archie Stead's presence enabled the momentum to be picked
up and a further 40 runs were added without loss, through a combination
of powerful hitting and quick running between the wickets. So a final
total of 92-4 was posted - Ben 49 n.o. and Archie 17 n.o.
Nailsea faired worse than us in their start and by the 4th over were
already 10-3 with their 3 opening batsmen back in the pavilion as a
result of good bowling from Simon Hill (1-16) and Ben (2-9). Nailsea
were not allowed to recover from this position as the pressure was kept
on their middle order by two excellent spells of bowling producing identical
figures from Josh Chastney (2-2) and Jacob Hartrey (2-2). By the 16th
over Nailsea were reduced to 47-7 and chasing a lost cause. The remaining
4 overs saw them score another 16 runs but loose 2 more wickets in the
process. A final score then of 63-8 and a memorable first victory over
them at U13's level for us by 29 runs. This follows on from a similar
defeat suffered by them at the hands of Cleeve last week so the Championship
is wide open!
Next week we again play Nailsea on their ground in the NCA KO Cup 2nd
round and an enthralling game is in prospect.
