MATCH REPORT
The 2nd round of the NCA Cup against the same league opposition as last
week was another formidable task and an opportunity to prove whether
or not our victory then was just a 'flash in the pan'.
Rhys Davies, captaining the side, elected to put Nailsea in to bat,
no doubt confident after our recent bowling performances that we could
contain their run making. This largely proved to be the case although
initially A. Thomas (24) got them off to a runaway start. A bowling
change to bring on Archie Stead and Garth Tiley however had the desired
effect and the run rate was curtailed by Garth's accuracy (4-0-9-0)
and wickets lost to Archie's (2-22) tantalising, although not yet totally
controlled, spin. Adam Burroughs came on as the second spinner and took
the crucial wicket of Thomas and with Oli Payne maintaining a tight
grip (4-0-18-0) in partnership with Ben Lyons (4-1-10-0) in the closing
overs Nailsea were kept to 87-3 in their allotted overs. The penultimate
ball of the innings did cause a bit of an alarm though as wicket keeper
Ali Palmer suffered a painful blow to his knee and had to be carried
off and was unlikely to take further part in the game.
Rhys & Archie opened our batting reply and had 26 runs on the board
inside 4 overs. Archie (15) was, however, out in the 5th over which
brought the inform Ben Lyons to the crease. Continuing where he had
left off the previous week Ben dominated the bowling taking runs at
will with Rhys joining in at the other end, the latter was eventually
out for 22, caught trying to hit over the top of mid on..Ben, under
KO rules, also had to retire at 30 n.o. but with the score by then on
81-2 in only the 11th over, getting 7 runs in 9 overs was a mere formality---
or was it! If you have ever experienced the feeling of watching events
on a video that you want to press pause on the controls to stop what
is happening, then the next 4 overs was one of those such occasions.
From what was an unassailable position we managed to lose 5 wickets
for 5 runs and were down to the last but one pair - with only an injured
Ali to come in still needing 2 runs for victory. Garth Tiley had played
a sloppy shot and was easily caught at mid off, Adam Burroughs was called
for 'never on' run by Tom Williams, who in turn was trapped lbw a couple
of balls later by D.Walker (2-15) who was the pick of the Nailsea bowlers.
Russell Moore spooned a catch to point and Oli Payne became another
lbw victim to Walker. This had left Simon Hill and David Eagon at the
crease with 4 overs to go to get the 2 runs required. Nailsea meanwhile
could not believe their luck and due credit to them applied maximum
pressure to get the most unlikely of wins. David survived the remainder
of the 16th over after Oli's departure without getting a bat on the
ball. The unbearable tension and fingernail biting was fortunately relieved
at the first ball of the next over when Simon managed to steer a shot
through the gully come slip area and obtain those 2 never more welcome
runs. A 3 wickets win but one that should have been a lot easier!
So, now on to the KO Semi-Finals at Home on the 6th June.
