MATCH REPORT
This game could prove to be our last of the season, and for another
two of our players – Rhys Davies & Archie Stead it was their
last regular game for the Club as they move onto boarding school education
outside the area in the next week and week after respectively. For the
same reasons we will also lose Tom Williams; Tom Bond; Alex Wall &
Alex Milward too next season.
Batting first Garth
Tiley (Captain) decided to open our innings with Rhys Davies and himself
as partners. Garth was just getting into his stride when he was caught
behind for 7 in the 3rd over, 13-1 and an early success for Optimists.
Archie Stead joined Rhys and ‘Steadied’ the ship until the
10th over when he too was out to a ‘grubber’ of ball for
21. So 56-2 at the halfway stage but Rhys was still at the other end
and now joined by Tom Williams, who has seen a resurgence in his batting
form. In the next 7 overs they put on 78 runs until Tom was out on 19
on the last ball of the 18th over. In the 2 overs left Ali Palmer (7no)
helped Rhys add another 24 runs to see us to a large total of 158-3.
For the 3rd time this season Rhys (70no, including 11 fours) had carried
his bat throughout an innings, a testament to his batting consistency
this season.
Would our bowlers
help ‘whittle’ away this total through excessive extras?
No, for only one of a few occasions this season we actually reversed
this trend and gave a much tighter bowling account of ourselves. Even
using 10 bowlers our total bowling extras only amounted to 16. Only
1 Optimists batsman reached double figures – Benson (14), as we
regularly took wickets shared principally between Tom Bond (2-3); Ali
Palmer (2-14) & Josh Chastney (2-7). To be fair Optimists had fielded
an inexperienced team and were also 2 players short (we loaned Harry
Williams & George Bond to them for the game to make up numbers),
so really struggled against our for once accurate bowling. They eventually
finished 55 all out as we recorded a 103 run win.
A 10th consecutive
league victory means we have caught up with Cleeve, who are also undefeated
after 10 games but we both still have 2 games to play, one of them against
one another which will decide who wins the League title. This, however,
presents us with a problem as into the bank holiday week and beyond
we have a much weakened team strength with the absence of Ben, Rhys,
Archie and others who have taken holidays and/or will be away at boarding
school on their return. However, Cleeve say it would be unfair on them
not to play the game and the League have supported this view. It is
equally un-fair on us for such an important game …. but we shall
see!
It has subsequently
proved impossible to agree on a ‘mutually convenient’ date
with Cleeve so regrettably we will finish runners–up on a ‘technicality’.
