MATCH REPORT
With the holiday season now underway our challenge for league honours
in the 9 games still to be played between now and the end of August
will be well tested as we will be unable to field full strength sides
for much of that time, as was the case in this game.
Nevertheless we had little cause for concern on this occasion as our
opening batting pair Ben Lyons & Rhys Davies established an opening
first wicket partnership of 95, (an U13's record) before Ben was bowled
in the 13th over for a powerfully hit 40 runs. Even with his departure
the scoring rate of 7 an over was pretty well maintained as another
52 runs were accumulated in the remaining 7 overs. Rhys managed to retain
the majority of the strike and played an almost faultless innings for
an impressive 58 not out, (batting throughout the 20overs) assisted
by knocks from Garth Tiley (6) and Ollie Payne (5no). So we posted our
highest yet league total of 147 for 4.
Given such a large score to chase there was a more relaxed attitude
towards our bowling formation and it was decided to give everyone an
opportunity to bowl, but not to become too complacent in the process!.
Early wickets were taken by Simon Hill (1-5), Alex Wall (1-4) which
together with a run out had the visitors on 25 for 3 after 7 overs.
However, the mood was a little too relaxed as J.Kelly (27) and J.Bull
(13) started making inroads into the total which, assisted by a further
worrying lack of accuracy on our bowlers part, boosted their score by
48 runs in the space of 6 overs to 73-3. The partnership was broken
by G.Tiley (1-11) after a smart catch by Simon Hill dismissed Kelly.
Bull followed soon afterwards, a stumping victim to the Rhys Davies
and Adam Burroughs (1-22) combination. On 86-5 after 16 overs a miracle
would still be needed for Portishead to pass our total and with our
frontline bowlers having entered the fray Ollie Payne (1-11) and Ben
Lyons (0-6) they were restricted to 14 runs from the last 4 overs, so
reaching 100-6 and giving us a winning margin of 47 runs.
One more victory but another 8 games to go and stronger opposition still
to come!
