MATCH REPORT
Going into this game without several of our more experienced and accomplished
players gave some cause for concern as to our ability to get the better
of a young but up and coming Uphill Castle team.
We had no need to fear as we were privileged to witness one of those
classical moments where an in form player produces one of those gems
of a batting performances that you never forget. We are fortunate to
have such a player, and Captain, as Ben Lyons who re-wrote our record
books by making the first league century of any player at youth team
level in the Club and creating a record U13's 20 overs batting total.
Opening with Ali Palmer, Ben dominated the bowling from the first ball.
Using his blistering power, stroke play and timing he peppered the Uphill
Castle attack to all quarters of the ground. His 101 included sixteen
4's and two 6's. The opening partnership with Ali lasted 8 overs and
produced 54 runs, of which Ali scored 9 before being out to a catch
behind 'hanging his bat in the wind'! Garth Tiley (38 no) joined Ben
and between them, with a partnership of 92 (another U13's 2nd wicket
record), took the score to 146 by the 19th over before Ben, having got
his ton, was anxious not to relax the pace and was run out, by some
smart Uphill fielding, backing up too far for a quick single. Deservedly
he left the pitch to an ovation from players/onlookers alike from all
round the ground (146-2). Garth meanwhile stuck to the task in hand
with the balls remaining and blasted another 20 runs - losing Jacob
Hartrey to another run out - to take our total to 166-3 surpassing our
previous best from the week before against Portishead.
With this even larger score for Uphill to chase we had to be very confident
of preventing them for getting near that total. However, with 22 on
the board after 2 overs, it was obvious that they were going to give
it a go! The normally reliable Simon Hill got hit off his length and
stride (0-33). Ollie Payne (1-11) bowling the other end however, removed
one of the openers in the 3rd over , courtesy of an excellent mid wicket
catch by Ben. However, the next occasion on which Ben got hand to ball,
trying to take a catch at square leg, disastrously marred his day as
it resulted in him badly damaging his thumb, leaving the game for the
duration and having to visit the A & E at W-S-M General Hospital, fortunately,
only just down the road. The extent of the injury is not yet known.
Garth Tiley took over as Captain and David Eagon, twelfth man, came
on as substitute for Ben. This event seemed to stir the team on and
with Russell Moore (0-12), Adam Burroughs (0-9) and Jacob Hartrey (0-5)
all bowling accurately from their total spell of 8 overs, the initial
11 an over run rate was drastically curtailed as we gained more control.
Uphill's 2nd wicket fell in the 15th over with the score on 72 as Garth
(1-10) brought himself into the attack. A run out in the same over accounted
for their 3rd wicket. Arron Ford (0-19) making his U13's debut meanwhile
bowled well at the other end. Although an impressive A. Luke (46 no)
batted throughout the Uphill innings his initial momentum was contained
until he had a further flourish in the final 5 overs, Uphill adding
another 43 runs to finish on 115-3 giving us a win by 51 runs.
So one more victory, now 5, but another 7 games to go and tough opposition
still to come!
