MATCH REPORT
With most peoples attention being captured by the World Cup in Japan
& Korea I do not think it would be inappropriate to suggest that our
team came to this important semi-final cup game with a 'Kamikaze' attitude
hell bent on destroying their chances of reaching the final. This is
precisely what they did by producing the worst ever bowling performance
witnessed from any of our youth teams in recent times.
Not having played for 5 weeks and coming into this game short of match
practice may have been a factor but really did not excuse what happened
with the whole bowling attack (8 bowlers were used) unable to string
together any consistent line. The end result was that out of a total
score of 102 for 0 achieved by Weston we gifted them 65 of those in
extras, including the equivalent of 4 overs in wides and no balls (counted
as 2 runs). No team deserves or should expect to win a game, least of
all one of 20 overs, on that basis. The fact that we failed to take
even one wicket, with what is regarded as one of the best bowling attacks
in the league shows how badly we bowled. We never troubled their openers
who carried their bats for the whole innings and only had to sit back
and watch the runs accumulate, needing little effort to score when they
did get a ball to hit!
Enough said about the bowling, the between innings team talk centred
on what needed to be done to redeem themselves batting. Even this though
proved beyond their capabilities on the night with 2 unnecessary run-outs
at the start of our innings Garth Tiley (10) and Ben Lyons (23) adding
to our woes. Whilst we were nevertheless keeping pace with the required
run rate thanks to Archie Stead (11) and Rhys Davies our chances of
victory diminished with Rhys's compulsory retirement at 30 runs under
the NCA KO Cup rules, with just a couple of overs to go. The incoming
batsmen thereafter, failed to stay long enough to make any headway as
3 wickets fell cheaply, 2 in the first 3 balls of the last over. With
3 balls remaining 7 runs were still needed for victory. A scrambled
Lloyd Davies single gave Ali Palmer the strike for the penultimate ball,
which was lustily hit for 4, giving us a glimmer of hope. So 2 runs
required off the final ball, but bat did not meet ball so consigning
us to an ignominious exit, much to the surprise but obvious elation
of Weston.
