MATCH REPORT
Both sides were struggling to raise teams for this game with our shortage
of players being particularly severe, the most we could muster being
8, which included 2 U11's. Wrington were not much better off, with only
9 players and a contingent of U11's too. Nevertheless it was agreed
to stage the match but reduced to16 overs per side. Wrington 'in the
spirit of the game' supplied us the extra fielder when they batted.
With Archie Stead having returned from a 4 week holiday the normal opening
partnership with Rhys Davies was resumed, to great effect, reaching
70 without loss by the 9th over. Archie, however, decided to leave his
crease to get after the bowling and was stumped for 33 in the next over.
Ben Lyons, now recovered from his thumb injury, then joined Rhys and
between them they more than doubled the score in the remaining 6 overs,
with Ben running himself out for 31 off the last ball striving for that
final extra run! However, 158-2 was a formidable enough score off 16
overs, throughout which the ever consistent and reliable Rhys had batted
undefeated for 89. Had there been a further 4 overs he surely would
have emulated Ben's earlier feat at Uphill of hitting a ton. Another
big total had been set.
Garth Tiley produced a wicket with his 2nd ball of our first over so
we made inroads straight away into the Wrington batting. Alex Milward
chipped in with an impressively accurate (2-4) to keep the pressure
on. Wickets fell steadily and by the 6th over Wrington were 19-5, with
Garth (2-16) bagging another one and a run out accounting for the 5th.
Anton Lovatt (2-6) and Douglas Gray (1-12), making their U13's debuts,
were brought into the attack towards the end and got amongst the wickets
too, with Douglas claiming the final 8th wicket in the 14th over to
end Wrington's innings on 54-8 and give us a victory by 104 runs. The
continuing trend of extras being the highest score for the opposition
than their collective batting total, no Wrington batsman reached double
figures, remains a worry.
So one more victory but still another 5 games to go.
