MATCH REPORT
Last season in the NCA KO 1st Round we were given a 'walkover' by Claverham.
Our Wrington opponents this time round were not so condescending but
were a weakened side so we duly saw off their challenge without breaking
into a sweat, not that that was likely in the deceptively cold evening
air.
Wrington batted first and within the space of 6 overs were reduced to
15 for 5. Captain Garth Tiley led the way with a spell of 3 wickets
in his first 3 overs, ably supported by Simon Hill and Oli Payne who
chipped in with a wicket apiece. Deciding to rest these opening bowlers
and give the rest of the side a bowl allowed Wrington to hang on for
the next 10 overs during which time they added a further 20 runs. Then
by a quirk of fete Ali Palmer, previously retired from wicket keeping
duties due to quicker ball taking him unawares, found himself out in
the field and being called upon to bowl. Suddenly Wrington were reduced
to 37 for 8 as Ali proceeded to take the most unlikely of hat-tricks.
The Wrington inning then folded within the next 2 overs and they were
all out for 40, Garth taking the last wicket to bring his match tally
to 4 for 10. Ali finished with 3 for 4. Only D.Tapson (10) finished
in double figures for Wrington.
Not a daunting total for our batsmen to chase but any complacency was
soon to be dispelled as Ali P lost his wicket in the first over, O for
1. Garth came in to join Lloyd Davies, opening for the U 13's for the
first time and together they progressed the score to 22 by the 5th over,
with some lusty blows to the boundary from the skipper. Lloyd was out
next over standing no chance to a 'grounder'. Russell Moore came to
the crease and kept his wicket in tact whilst at the other end Garth
set about the Wrington attack and the game was wrapped up by the 9th
over with Garth finishing on 32 n.o. - including 7 fours. A real all
round Captains performance.
So a comprehensive first U13's victory of the season in which the whole
team performance was good. Lets hope we can maintain this throughout
the season.
