MATCH REPORT
One swallow does not make a summer, as they say, but summer(temperatures
still in the high 70’s at 6pm!) had well and truly arrived for
this game but so had Cheddar, with a venegance.
Winning
the toss and electing to bat first they took our opening attack apart
with some blistering shots and a run rate of 9 an over. Before we knew
it they had passed fifty and compiled an opening partnership of 67 by
the 7th over when Rhys Davies managed to take our first wicket –
Wdowski(25). This did not stem the flow of runs though as each of the
succeeding top order batsmen were in belligerent mood. Three more out
of the five scored double figures - D.Phillips (42); J.Butler (30);
J.Simms (14) and between them hit 18 boundaries moving the score along
to 132-3 by the 15th over. R.Davies (2-32) and A.Burroughs (1-22) were
our only wicket takers up to this stage. It was looking like another
150+ total and a pounding similar to that which we received in our first
game verus Optmists but we managed to contain them much more in the
last 5 overs as R.Moore (2-16)and A. Milward (1-11) bowled well and
abated the onslaught. Cheddar only managed to score another 10 runs
as they finished on 142-8. Even so a massive target in 20 overs.
Needing
to get off to a good start we were never allowed out of the blocks as
an extremely volatile Cheddar bowling attack pinned us down to a meagre
run rate of 4 in the first 6 overs as we struggled to 23-2. Although
we had lost no further wickets by the 10th our score was only 45-2 so
still required another 93 runs in the remaining 10. We never got anywhere
near that as a steady flow of wickets, D.Stacey (3-12) and M.Wdowski(2-6)
doing the damage, precipitated the loss of a further 7 batsmen. Our
only batting successes were from Captain Adam Crooks (28, including
a 6) who showed a welcome return to some sort of form and Alex Milward
(11no) but even so we fell well short of the target at 88-9 and a pretty
resounding defeat.
