MATCH REPORT
After our previous weeks win in the friendly game there was some optimism
that we would now have the confidence to gain our first league win of
the season.
Claverham
elected to bat first which initially did not seem to have been the right
decision as our opening attack pinned them down to just over 3 runs
an over. At 33-3 by the 10th over we had a good control of the game.
Jenny Withers (1-27) and Adam Burroughs (2-14) claimed wickets in this
spell. However, from there on in we lost our grip on the game and again,
through a combination of below par fielding, dropped catches and inaccurate
bowling, we conceded 81 runs in the final 10 overs, the 4th wicket pairing
of S.Bird (52 no and A.Bird (25) compiling a partnership of 86 whilst
we gained only 1 other wicket in the process, a run out off the last
ball. A figure of 20 extras helped Claverham’s total over the
hundred mark as they finished on 114-4.
In
our last league game we did manage our first 100+ score which on this
placid wicket was an achievable target. However we found, as Claverham
did, the progress difficult against tight bowling but by our 10th over
we were in a better position than them at this stage on 38 runs without
loss but still needing nearly 8 runs an over! A degree of panic set-in
on the realisation of this and our failure, earlier in the innings,
to take more singles (amidst pleas from the players/supporters on the
boundary). In the effort to up the pace we managed to perform a kamikaze
act with 3 run outs in the space of the next 4 overs. At 53-3 in the
14th over we were now looking at over 10 runs an over and careless shots
were played going for them and we again collapsed to an un-impressive
67 all out off the last ball of the innings. Richard Veater (26) was
our only batsmen to reach double figures during the opening partnership
of 39 with Sam Honeywill (9).
