MATCH REPORT
Near perfect conditions on a lovely summers evening set the scene for
the away encounter with Cleeve, our close rivals at U13’s level
from last season, with our team boosted by the return home of some of
our ‘boarders’.
Deciding
to bat first we made a brisk start with 33 runs on the board by the
4th over but lost Tom Williams (1) and Ali Palmer (10) in the process.
By the 12th over Tom Bond (7), Ben Lyons (6) and Sam Honeywill (0) had
also followed them back to the pavilion but the score had moved on substantially
to 75-5. The next over accounted for the loss of a further 2 wickets,
Jenny Withers (6) and Matt Smith (0) without a run being scored and
it looked like the familiar collapse, as Rocliffe (4-18) threatened
to run through us! However, Rhys Davies (57), who had been the linchpin
of our innings with, as ever, an almost flawless batting display throughout,
and Simon Hill (8no) had other ideas. Another 40 runs were added in
the remaining 6 overs before Rhys was out with 3 balls to go giving
us only our second century plus total of the season as we finished on
115-8, a healthy target to defend.
Cleeve’s
response never really took off as they were pinned down by accurate
bowling from Ben Lyons (0-4), Simon Hill (2-9) and Jenny Withers (1-13)
and by the 10th over were struggling on 29-3. Dent (20) and Rocliffe
(10) staged a mid order recovery but after Russ Moore (2-22) has dismissed
them by the 15th over we were back in control at 60-5. Power (17) had
a final flourish with the bat but Tom Bond (1-15) and Sam Honeywill
(1-10) maintained the pressure in the last overs as, together with a
run out, Cleeve’s innings ended on 81-8. A welcome and comfortable
first league win of the season by 34 runs.
